By coincidence, this little item arrived May 5, 2015, just before the Mexican holiday "Cinco de Mayo", which celebrates the Mexican Army victory over the invading French Army at Puebla on May 5, 1862. The French were trying to install an Austrian duke as Maximilian I, Emperor of Mexico.
Mexico, Eight Escudos 1862, Durango Mint, Hand on Book style Gold, 37mm, 26.95gm
Spanish and Mexican Eight Escudo coins were sometimes called "Doubloons".
The coin has circulated quite a bit from it's wear and scratches.
It is interesting to speculate where it has been since 1862.
