Chop Mark or just Damage on this Trade Dollar?

Hi folks,

I was just wondering if you would consider the mark on this Trade Dollar a Chop Mark or just some other type of damage? I have been trying to get familiar with the different types of chops and am not aware of this mark.

Definitely damage, the photos aren't real clear but every trade dollar I have with chop marks look like Chinese symbols while that looks like a cut. I have a hard time believing on an uncirculated trade dollar there would be one chop mark that looks like a cut.

I believe it is a type of test mark to see if the coin was solid silver, but is not a merchants chop mark. I am not sure if PCGS would straight grade that coin.

Also a pretty nasty gash on the rev. rim. I think "damaged" is appropriate designation.

It probably isn't a chop mark. Keep in mind that, regardless of what the "market" wants you to believe, chop marks are damage.

It looks like a screwdriver mark and not a chop mark.

Who can say? Possibly marked in China but we will never know. Now if it had other Chinese chops, they would lend that mark some legitimacy.
