1918/7 S Overdate Quarter Update

JcldJcld Posts: 449 ✭✭✭
So just an update. I am not sure why the thread I started about this was deleted, but I just spoke with PCGS customer service and they are going to bring the coin back in for review. They were super helpful and apparently the overdate on the coin wasn't checked for during the first grading process. I was told I should have put the coin number and a note about the coin, in this case, a note saying that I believed it to be an overdate coin. In that way the graders have another heads up when looking at the coin. So fingers crossed it will come back as an overdate.

    Well, if you didnt submit it under the correct number, I wouldn't have expected them to attribute it. Even though this overdate is obvious under strong magnification, the graders are blowing through hundreds of coins a day using a 3x loupe. They're not going to scrutinize every coin on the off chance it is a variety.
    Anyway, glad it is going to work out for you!

    You don't have to put in the coin number. Just ck attribution box and put the variety number in the variety column.

    It is in the red book, do you need a variety submission for this? At one time no, but it does have an FS number now -

    Unless you are a complete novice with the Standing Liberty Quarter series, just about EVERYONE would look at the date (1918-S) for the possible overdate!

    Your thread is still "out there";

    Pretty sure he said in the other thread that he wrote the right coin # down. So what SHOULD'VE been done is the error caught internally.

    It is a major variety and as such, has its own coin #.

    MS66 taste on an MS63 budget.

    I don't think you have to pay for variety attribution for this coin. Just cite the coin number (5726) and note that it's a 1918/7-S in the variety column.

    Returns for mechanicals may be free but they're still a pain. It never hurts to be very clear about varieties.

    Correct, since this is a major variety, just simply list it as the over date. If you simply listed it as an 18-S, then I see why it was not labeled as such, even though it is the clear over date.

    Moral of the coin story : "Better to have meat on bones than bones in closet " I thought your other thread was sufficient to see what you have... at least in my eyes. Kudos. Glad it's worked out. I know it can be a pain in the numbskull... but that's what's nuts about the whole thing. It always works out when it is what it is. Not a lot of drama, but a good lesson in how "social" networking works. This is a "major" platform.

    The printed insert that went on the flip should have said 1818/7-S if the correct coin number was used, no?
