Counterfeit Error Coin Nails Continue to Sale

It seems like these counterfeit nails just continue to pop up out of the woodwork (pun intended.) Here's one that just sold on eBay: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Error-...3a2:g:hb0AAOSw3mpXF44c

For anyone who doesn't know much about these, if it's not slabbed, there's a 99.9% chance it's counterfeit since all the known examples are certified at this point (that I'm aware of.)

You pretty much hit that one on the head.

I would just adjust Jon's percentage to 100% it's counterfeit if it

is on Ebay, or just about any other source other than a known error

dealer. The real one's aren't just floating around estates, collections, etc.

As Jon says, at this point, all the West Point nails from 1977

are in NGC holders, and all the State Quarter nails (two known)

and the few Roos. dime nails are certified.

I believe there are 2-3 other Roos. dime nails that have been sold

about 12-15 years ago that might not be slabbed yet, but the

one's being made in China are fairly obviously counterfeit.

It'll be interesting to see what the $310 buys says after he submits

his (old design) Washington Quarter for certification.

Not to pick on the error community, but have any of these actually made it out of the minting process legitimately? These really have the look of an inside job. Has one ever been found in a bag of coins?

Says item location is Dallas, TX.

Text of auction appears written in Chinese-English.

I have dealt with Chinese-English writings for almost 20 years and it just reads that way.

Not an error person, but I just see red flags with that listing to the point that I would run and run fast.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

That would be neat. Double eagle struck on railroad spike sounds crazy.

These will certainly be floating around for years and years to come, similar to the way the 1943 "copper" platted coins show up all the time.
