1807 Early Half Eagle - GTG

CharlotteDudeCharlotteDude Posts: 3,165 ✭✭✭✭✭
Received this from JMB (yes - that was another major shout out) earlier this week. Had a bit of a postal "scare" in its delivery... JMB shipped it Express mail/Signature Required (clearly marked on the shipping label). While at work, and checking the USPS website on the day of delivery, it showed the package had been "delivered, signature waived"... what??? Luckily, the missus was teleworking that day, but had been out on @ 3 hrs worth of errands. I called her right after she arrived back home... the package had been sitting out on the front porch. Fortunately for all parties (particularly for the Express Deliverer - thank you video recording) the package was secured. I had a somewhat undiplomatic (not ugly, but I made sure I made my point about the potential problems it could've caused) phone chat w/my PO's supervisor, and he assured me the Express Deliverer bungled the delivery - and would be counseled, as well as some retraining was in order. A lot to digest for a GTG, I know... I apologize for that. I just wanted everyone to know that even when you think you're shipping something of value with what should be a secure chain of receipts... doesn't mean it'll always happen that way.

Now, on to the GTG. I'm posting two pics each to provide two angles of view. What might you think she grades?

Thanks gents... She's a BD-1 variety. The only 1807 variety (of six) with small reverse stars. Of the less than 33K produced, approx 80-100 of the Sm Star variety are estimated to exist, while the Lg Star varieties total 250-280 or so. Interestingly, PCGS and I believe NGC do not discern between the Sm Star & Lg Star varieties, although they do for the 1799 HE. Like her silver cousins, 1807 was a year of transition in Philadelphia, with the mint changing to John Reich's Capped Bust Left design during the latter part of the year... to the tune of an additional 51K Half Eagles bearing Mr. Reich's artistry.

Any others care to take a guess at the grade? I will say that for those who've pitched a guess, your eyes are working quite well for you.

    Fantastic, gorgeous coin.

If I were to order coins like this, there is no way I'd ship to anything but a PO box. I've had too much drama with random weirdness that happens once it's in the hands of a carrier.

'Dude, I'm somewhat surprised that a collector at your level doesn't have a PO box.

Great coin, I'll guess MS60 and will no doubt be wrong, but I just cant bring myself to write "either Au58 or MS61" image

My first thought was 55 but 58 wouldn't bother me a bit.

Very nice piece. I am sometimes bothered by the amount of chatter on gold but not

    with this piece!

Coincidentally, when I last bought an 1807 $5, I had a real post office clusterf...., somewhat more concerning than the one in the OP. The tracking number said the coin was delivered and signed at an address that is currently abandoned, it was not delivered to my house, and no notice was left!!! It turned out to be in the post office. WTF?

My previous mailman would leave coins on the doorstep all the time, and I really appreciated not having to be home to sign for them.

Nice coin, and I agree that jmb is a cool dude!

I can only imagine your blood pressure had risen a few notches until you figured out what came of the coin. Sounds like another prime example of sloppy work/lack of attention.

I like Bailey's suggestion of renting a PO Box for the mailing/shipping of coins, and will probably pursue that option.
