PNNA Coin Show pick ups...

jtlee321jtlee321 Posts: 2,365 ✭✭✭✭✭
This was my first visit to the PNNA show in Tukwila, WA. I was only able to go Friday, I wish I could have had more time to go back. But I did manage to cherrypick a few nice coins today. All 3 are raw and I got an incredible deal on them.

The first is a very nice 1941-S Washington Quarter FS-503 Large S

The next is a 1945-S Mercury Dime Micro S that was in a 2x2 marked as a 1943-S
I'm seriously considering submitting this. Any opinions on what it might grade?

This one was in a box of Mercury Dimes all in 2x2's and the box was marked $2.00 each!!

I very much like your photographs. A question about the quarter: The mint mark seems mashed. Is that what makes it a "large" mint mark or is it a characteristic of the "large" mint mark?

Thanks Mark. The mintmark on the quarter is known as a "Filled" mintmark. It is a characteristic of this particular variety. It is one of the PUPS along with the triangular shaped bottom serif on the S. According the the Cherrypickers Guide there is only one known die for this reverse which makes it a very difficult variety to find.

Sorry to miss it, no longer in the PNW, but it's always been a fun show.

I had a fun couple of hours jtlee.

Segoja took some time to give me his professional opinion on a coin from my collection.

I picked up a raw Philly mint Jeff with nice subtle toning to complete my birth year mint set but otherwise I just did a lot of window shopping.

I was about a quart low on energy this weekend since I've been swamped (pardon the pun ) at work so I didn't stick around as long as I usually do.

Nice!! I'm glad to hear you had a good time and at least brought something home. I always hate to leave empty handed.

    Nice Quarter.

    The 45-S looks 58-62.

    Nice 26-s for 2 bucks.

Your micro S looks at least 64 to me, probably better, bands are very close.

Nice job for $40, the 41-S looks at least 64 as well.

The 45-S is unquestionably MS. I think I'm going to bring the 45-S dime and 41-S quarter to my local shop tomorrow so they can submit to PCGS. I don't have direct submission with PCGS.

Does PCGS automatically indicate Micro S on the dime, or do I need to pay for variety attribution on it? The quarter is obvious for the attribution fee.

The large photos overstate flaws. I'd say that the 45-S is MS-66.

Oh how I would love for it to come back MS66 FB!!! But I don't think it would. The hit on the fasces is what will hold it back. I will be very pleased to see it as a 65 though.

Thank you ScarsdaleCoin, I really appreciate the compliment.

    Thanks guys.

I'm considering ponying up for the Gold Membership here at PCGS, I just don't like not being able to track my order which is what will happen if I have my local dealer send these in.
