I am not sure about this one. First thing I would do is weight it. 1988 is a zinc planchet.

  • It is probably a 1980-P, since most nickels on cents are (maybe 1/5 of all 5c on 1c are that date.)

    I don't think it's a 88 either, but I do know, it's a P Mint-Mark from these images .

I would imagine so, a one year design (it may be a half a year, they made the "American Bison" and "Ocean in view" as part of The 2005 Westward Journey Nickel Series) would be a very desirable piece!

Here is mine, a 1969-D graded MS-65 RB by NGC. It is a cool kind of error!

We call them error coins. In industry, they would be called scrap.

    Nice looking coin there ...

As others have said, probably 1980. The mintmark style narrows it down from 1980-1984 or 1985, my brain's not working at 100% at the moment. The MM in 1988 was larger.

    What a beautiful coin!

That's the prettiest nickel on cent planchet that I have seen.

It's likely that differences in striking pressure and or die clearance caused these two to expand at different magnitudes within their respective nickel collar dies.

Thanks for that answer, according to the 2007 Red-Book, Cent planchet from 1969 to 1982 measured 19 MM .

Why does the mint use the metric system . The US never used that measuring system .

Weigh a few normal pre-1982 cents on the same scale just to see how accurate it is.
