A young dealer

goldengolden Posts: 9,972 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was at a show on Friday and overheard a conversation between a young dealer and a customer. Young dealer: " At my old job I was never excited to get up and go to work. Now doing this I make less money but I am happier and feel better ". Very cool! image

That's pretty cool. I say chase your dream job, take risks and be creative. One can always get a J.O.B.

I see my coin dealer friends deal with a lot of pressure and stress that seems to grind them down over time and takes a toll. Not sure if it's inherent to the business but they bob and weave through forces they have little control over. Spot price, awarded grades body bags, market swings, auctions, interest on credit, etc. all seem to apply pressure to an otherwise neat sounding profession.

There are some young dealers who really hustle and work hard. I remember one at the ANA a few years ago who was working a booth with his mom who was also a dealer. He was wheeling and dealing like crazy. I saw him all over the floor making deals all week.

Cool...I know many people who'd likely say the same thing, if they were in his shoes.

A wise man finds no distinction between work and play.

What do you consider "young"? I was at the Waterloo, IA coin show and I would say there were probably 3-4 under 30. (Only 30 dealers or so there).

I left a lucrative career for a thankless job in a b&m. Now I get more peace and quiet than the janitor at a retirement center.

Hard for me to judge age , but I would guess 30 or under.

Jeez, there's hope for that generation after all. What a refreshing outlook (although it shouldn't be).

Do what you like and like what you do..... the difference between a 'job' and a 'career'..

Anyone who sticks with a job they hate is crazy....Cheers, RickO

as long as one is happy the rest will take care of it self.
  • I am 24 years old and have been a full time coin dealer for about 6 years now. I was fortunate to meet several coin dealers from my area who helped me along the way. They didn't know too much about computers and the potential of eCommerce so I was able to help them grow their businesses online while they taught me the basics of dealing in numismatics. I don’t think there is any need to worry about my generation or the generations to come. There always has been and always will be investors and collectors.

    I'm going the other direction....

Once I get finish (retire) from this JOB thing I've got going, I'm considering dabbling as a dealer. Heck, I don't even need to make money....just kill 10 or 20 hours a week to keep me out of trouble. image

Having a source of income doing something you enjoy is something everyone wants, but few can find.

That's awesome for him! I'm not thrilled about my job but it pays the bills. I'd rather be a phys ed teacher and just coach, but that doesn't pay the bills. So I'm stuck where I'm at, being forced to spend $12,000 in education just to keep my job. I missed the "educational barrier" by 6 months. I'd lose my job for only having an associate's degree....after being with the company for nearly 5 years.
