Anyone have a cast counterfeit 1842 Quarter?

If so, it might have come from this mold. It has distinct doubling of the date.

I'd guess that it's contemporary with the circulation of these coins, 1840s-61.

I hope it's legal to own. It's a really interesting piece of history.

It came out of an estate auction a couple of years ago.

I take it that is a soft brass alloy...you think a real coin was pressed into the brass?

I hadn't noticed the faint "0" mintmark, but there is one there.

Since it looks like this mold was impressed on both sides at least twice, could the reverse impressions be from two different coins, an "0" mint first, followed by a reverse without a mintmark? This might account for the faint "0". Maybe the New Orleans reverse was too weak and a Philadelphia coin showed more detail?

What could be some other explanations for the weak "0"?
