Contemporary Counterfeit Seated Half dollar pickup...

BINd this last week. Seller listed it as a genuine coin. Found this type listed on the LSCC website as 1877-102. LinkI believe it to be the same. The biggest give away is the so-called ostrich neck of liberty and brass colored. I also noticed that on mine Liberty's face looks doubled.

    Nice!
Interesting how some of these contemporary counterfeits are more desirable than an original.

Yeah, like a Henning nickel. The only real Jefferson nickels that come close in price in circ grades are the doubled dies and the repunched mint marks.

Beauty. I love the jacked up stars to the left of her head. My goal is to get one like yours. I only have cast copies in my collection.

    That is a neat one.

Quite a while back I bought a small collection and it had this coin in it.
It has a silvery-brass color and it is definitely a vintage counterfeit from hand-cut dies.
Is this one of the LSCC listed vintage counterfeits ?

Edit: Apparently not as it doesn't match 1877-101 or 1877-102.

I like the counterfeits from that era - we in the 21st century oft forget how much counterfeiting was going on during that time - during the Civil War up to a third of currency in circulation was forged.

At that time, counterfeiting coins was profitable....now, the ROI simply is not achievable.

if you figure in the time, effort, investment in material etc that would go into making a counterfeit half dollar that would pass today, then remember that its a half dollar, its easy to arrive at that conclusion

Go to the LSCC website on seated contemporary counterfeits. It tells you who to contact. I would link it but I'm on my Android.
