Ugh...Another Modern Counterfeit 1839-O Reeded Edge Half Dollar on Ebay

TomBTomB Posts: 21,978 ✭✭✭✭✭
These all seem to have a story attached to them. I have informed folks who claim it belonged to their brother or coworker or that they picked it up at a pawn shop and now this one is from an estate. They are terrible.

Sadly, he's received favorable feedback on counterfeit coins already sold (for example, the 1865 Two Cent).
His current offerings, 1805 and the other half dollar are also counterfeit.

The seller responded to me, after I sent them a message, and stated that the 1839-O would be coming down. It appears to have been removed.

Estate sale...they no knotting about values.

Sigh...someone is going to pay some "education tuition" on counterfeit discs of metal...I just can't call these items "coins".

I commem section on ebay seems to have it's share of counterfeits and some of them are just pretty bad. If they are from Russia you have a 99% chance of a counterfeit. And they get multiple bids on them. image

image I missed that the first time. That's hilarious. But fooling unsuspecting buyers is anything but funny.

At least he offered to mail it directly from a post office.
I've seen coins like these mailed from a butcher shop......

I really don't feel sorry for ignorant collectors who pay big bucks for these easy-to-spot Chinese fakes.

It's not that they've been on the market for a short time.

Rather, they've been around for more than 15 years.

If you can't detect this type of fake in about 30 seconds or so, it really is time to look for a new hobby.

I would like to learn but am not sure what you are talking about. What is it that we all need to know? Instead of just belittling people on these topics please educate us. I truly would like to know what we are supposed to be doing!

It amazes me as to how many people will risk $1000 or more on coins like this. They are not even close to the real deal. i do not get why a person with no knowledge of what they are buying simply throws money at coins that they know nothing about.
