TONED 1950-1964 PROOF SET UPDATE!

I had the fortune of someone showing this coin to me at Winter FUN.

No True View yet so I did the best I could photographing it through the slab.

The journey to complete the 1950-1964 Proof Set with only attractively

toned examples is not easy and the most difficult to find are the Franklin

Half Dollars. Heck, they might be the ones that prevent completion of the

set! Knowing this, I was quite pleased to have the opportunity to get this

one that has a few nice colors. Since this is an early date, high grade,

CAC approved and nicely toned, I think I got pretty lucky. It will get a

True View one day, along with a few other coins but that is the least of

my concerns. Let me know what you think.

The set is now over 50% complete although I have a few raw coins that still need

to go in to PCGS and I just sent three coins in for cross. Hopefully that goes well

and I will have something nice to share in about 3 weeks or so.

Last week when I went to a coin show, I was able to pick up this 1961 Franklin

Half. It was raw and in a flip. It will get sent in to PCGS one day. I think it's

a nice hole filler for sure, considering how difficult the Franklin Proofs can be.

For $30, I think I did pretty well with this one. Every now and then a good deal

can be found which makes up for the others that you have to pay up for...

Let me know what you think. image

    Great album toners.

Tough to find either date so attractive.

well done on the progress of the set.

the 1961 looks typical for Whitman or Dansco albums, but the 1951 looks like it may have come out of a Capital holder that was stored wrong for a long time. to be graded PR66 it must be relatively hairline free which is almost a miracle for a 1951.

Me likey! A very attractive pair of Franklins. So, what dates are you finding the easiest and the hardest in the proof Franklin series to find attractively toned?

Thank you and Everyone else! image

For the set, I have been looking/working on this since last June. I had a nice 1962 but sold it, thinking I would eventually find a nicer one...well that was almost a year ago and still no replacement! I have a 1960 in my set that is pleasant but not a ton of color. I now have this 1961 which I am pretty happy with. The 1951 was a very lucky find because of everything I mentioned above. I have not seen much of anything else unfortunately. True monsters would end up costing a fortune in an auction as far as I can tell. To me the proofs seem to be much more difficult than the business strikes.
