Terminal toning on silver?

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,443 ✭✭✭✭✭
Have an experiment on my window sill. Bought these off the BST some time back housed in an older coin board.

Most of the silver quarters are nicely toned, but on one side only.

These 2 are much darker than the remaining coins - not sure what was done to them before I acquired them. image

Think I'll dip them, put them back on the window sill and see what happens.

NOoooooooooo! Use the 1960 to play with as it is gone! Only dip the bottom half so you can see both. Then you can play with the top half using baking soda before you dip it. You'll learn a lot about improper cleaning, when not to do it, and what it looks like. The other coin can be saved by a "professional" and come out nice enough to sell.

Looks like some serious environmental damage to what appears to be otherwise decent coins.

Yea the 60 is pretty rough. The 62 almost looks like an unrinsed dipped tone to me. But what do I know. Lol

    *Puts tin foil hat on*

They were on the window sill, huh? That is close to the window, which is outside. They sky is outside. You know what's in the sky? Chemtrails! Chemtrails produce toning!!!!!*

*Or the illuminate peering into your windows and toning them with their eyes.

In all seriousness, how long have they been sitting on the window sill? I like the '62.

Coin was obviously ALTERED while in GSA holder. In the book "Coin Chemistry" the author toned a group of coins in TPGS slabs to make a point that they were not air tight.

The ultimate fate of all silver coins that are allowed to tarnish unchecked. There could

be a few reasons for the speed at which it occurred.... some have been named already.

Certainly they provide the opportunity to learn further about dipping ... I would experiment if they were mine. Cheers, RickO

This has been sitting in a Dansco Album in a cool dry place for a long time. It just gets darker.

I posted one of Jay Cline's 1916 SLQ silvered brass store card tokens a couple years ago here which had toned into a peripheral ringed rainbow monster. I was in a hurry after I imaged it and tossed it back in it's paper envelope instead of a flip. I rediscovered it in a drawer about a year later and it looked like every animal on Noah's Ark took a dump on it.

No need to post pics as just look at illini420's GSA $1 and envision a few dozen black spots.

That poor '60 looks like it's on death's door. Or perhaps it already crossed over and came back to haunt someone...
Sure, experiments with Washies are easy.......crack that Stella and let's see what happens you big chicken!
