I CLEANED coins today...

....and I hope you might consider doing the same.

I have a small hoard of rusty steel wheat cents. Stainless steel pins, a little bit of Lemi Shine, couple squirts of dishwashing soap, tumble for a period of time....and now, most are rust free!

WHY am I doing this? These coins were junk.

At Tuesday nights coin club meeting, each member will received an envelope with a small quantity of these in each. Their mission? To set them FREE in the travels over the next couple of months!

WHY? With GREAT hope that these will start the fire in a new Numismatist!

A friend of mine's dad died about 10 years ago and they found a large box of steel cents in the basement in the corner under a bunch of junk. The moisture in the basement had turned these into the rustiest steel cents I had ever seen. I wish I would have known your trick at the time because it was a sad sight to see. On the upside, there was another box of silver dimes about the size of a shoe box. This made up for the rusty cents. We never could figure out why he kept so many steel cents and silver dimes and nothing else. He had another planters peanut glass jar full of other random coins and that was it.

Tumbling works.... also can be done in a cartridge vibratory cleaner.... Coins in such condition that they are junk can be saved for purposes such as YN's instead of being thrown away. Cheers, RickO

Giveaways are takeaways and vice versa. Let's hope your deed sparks a new generation of searchers and ultimately a few more collectors. The joys of gathering and assembly.

In my automotive business, I had 50 year old car parts chemically stripped, and one of the options is clear (regular) zinc. I toss in the skanky 1943's, and they come back looking, shine wise, like they are brand new. Does not repair the wear, but they look great. Best part: It is free. They charge by the container (55 gallon drum size) so the cents are just mixed in between the spindles, pulleys, etc. so they are free.
