AT/NT morgans

TwoKopeikiTwoKopeiki Posts: 9,860 ✭✭✭✭✭
I normally don't post on the US forums, but wanted to get your opinion on the following 2 Morgans. Picked up both at a local flea market here in Toronto. Colors look pretty wild to me, but I heard Morgans have been stored en masse in a variety of different conditions that imparted some wild toning.

Also, not a US coin guy, so not sure if these are common or not.

    Both are natural toned.

Since you can take good pictures, if you decide to not keep them you can list them on eBay and maybe make a nice small profit, depending on what you paid.

Those won't grade - don't care if they're NT or not

NT and they might grade. I wouldn't though.

I would call both coins NT and doubtful they will grade. Cheers, RickO

Pretty familiar with these toning patterns -- I would think that they will grade, but they will not get any type of grade bump for the colors.

Both look just fine to me.

    Many happy BST transactions

Thanks, all. That's quite a range of responses. When folks say that it's NT but would not grade - is this because the TPG would consider it AT or for some other reason?

Maybe they're suggesting that the toning has progressed to environmental damage?

It's easy to answer with more certainty on the forum when one has zero accountability. Ultimately everyone is guessing, but most are educated guesses, taking into account what history and experience have taught them. Google pictures of the Eliasberg 1889-CC if you want to see how hard it can be to grade from photographs. Bottom line is whether or not the coins are NT or AT it very likely does not pay to get them graded.

Thank you, David. I'm definitely not going to spend more money on these to get them slabbed.

Unusual toning patterns and colors to me, but Morgans are my strong point.

Glad they passed! If you spent 20 bucks or less, you might break even. Just not worth sending those type of coins in. At least I don't think it is and if I had seen these back then, I would have said the same thing. Cheers!

True, but they are Butt Ugly, and this from a Morgan and Peace toner guy. So what is it about then?

IMO they aren't butt ugly. That's what it's about.

I'm confused. I copy/pasted both of those cert numbers into the cert verification and both come back not valid.

If they just graded, there could be lag in the system where the numbers are assigned, but don't yet appear in the searchable database.
