Is Trevor Story the new Jeremy Lin?

Hitting six homeruns in his first four games is an incredible feat. I thought it'd be fun to see if Story's rookie card jumped over the last week, and holy crap did it.

A month ago his basic /500 card was around 25-30 bucks. Today a few sold at 350 BIN. Maybe by Sunday they will have jumped to 500. It's borderline insane. It's why I got out of the current card market after dablling in it for a few years.

I can't take the swings, don't know when to buy or sell, or hung on too long to some cards to sell, or which ones to just hang on to. Loaded up on 2012 and 2013 (Maybe 13-14) Topps Turkey Red and didn't sell em quick enough, eventually now just having a buncha dupes and one extra set. Tried busting some crazy shiny Bowman box for really no reason except caught in the moment, and then bought up a buncha Jean Segura cards when he was red hot a few years ago only for him to fall off pretty quickly after I built up a nice little collection. Live and learn.

When I got back into cards about five years back, I only was gonna focus on Milwaukee Braves, and the guys I loved as a kid. I'm completely happy with my 50s-60's cardboard where the prices slowly increase, and the reason behind the rise makes sense. They don't soar and drop like a roller coaster.

But, do what makes you happy, I just hope you don't get burned.

His OPS went from 1.42 to 1.61 'sh, in his 3rd to 4th game......4-4 of his hits were 4 HR's to JUST 6-7 hits with 6 HR's!!!! Of course he can't maintain this pace. But he was a 1st round pick and on his way to the bigs. And now going back home to batter friendly Colorado.....I'd short his cards if possible..but for now just enjoy the ride...

As far as playing the modern card game, the kids around here are too adept at moving in and out, watching trends and making $ from them and NBA shoes. Than us "old" people can be at playing their game. The kids here are eventually bound for option trading on the NYSE but for now are making some crazy $ trading modern cardboard.

Basically the Joc Peterson of 2016. There is a rookie like this every year....starts off amazingly strong ends up hitting .220.

The advantage this kid has is he plays for the Rockies so when he cools off his stats will still be inflated by playing at Coors Field.

In baseball it would be Tuffy Rhodes, a fascinating story, both as to a great start followed by year and career flop,.... although further followed by great fame in Japan

On opening day in 1994 he went 4-4 including 3 HRs off Dwight Gooden. The rest of his season was far from memorable and he later ended up in Japan where his 464 HRs ranks him first among foreign born players there. And at one time was tied with Oh for most HRs in a season, 55. Hopefully Story's MLB story will be better

Not to this level but I remember unbelievable hype about Chris Shelton of the Tigers when he went power crazy one spring training.

And for pitchers, Clay Bucholz with his no-hitter in his first start ran up his cards exponentially as well only to crash and burn.

Yes, remember Shelton, there must be one every 10 years that has a start like this, but flame put eventually??

It all goes along with the beginning of spring and opening day. Everyone's in and the potential dreams/hopes of fans and players. And almost always theres a story....one guy started with something like 6 HR's in his first 8 games but then finished the season with only 8 HR's...Many stories of forgotten names......Youre correct that most don't last.......Just enjoying the ride.

Trevor Story's beginning reminds me of The Cautionary Tale of Former Yankee Kevin Maas

Of course the pace will fade, but he's not a one hit wonder like Lin or Maas. The kid has been a known commodity for a while now, and worked his way through the minors without rushing. All reports for Rockies camp this spring were big on him as well. He's no 50 hr hitter, but he plays a premium position and will play half his games at Coors. Him becoming a .290/25/100 isn't out of the question.

The night before opening day I hit a $4 BIN for a signed 1st Bowman just because. Still hasn't shipped. Odds I never see it are infinity%.
  • I just went through my a case worth of 14 Bowman Draft and pulled about 8 Story paper base cards. Along with about 4 Chrome Schwarber rookie cards, 4 Bryant's and about 8 Correa's. If I can make $10 on the Story's, I'll be happy.

Speaking of Schwarber, I am curious to what impact Schwarber being out for the year will have on his cards. I had thought about picking up a chrome auto before the season started, but I would think as the season progresses out of sight, out of mind will bring a decline.

Did Story's cards just drop in value? He struck out in the first inning! image

Edited to add: I agree with what you said about Schwarber. Wait a couple months and you will probably get it a lot cheaper. Good Luck.

It's not just Story, the lead off for Colorado, DJ LeMahieu, is averaging over .500 and has 2 HRs himself. Then you have Story hitting 2, Colorado could be a team to watch this year!

Edit: I am keeping my mouth shut next time. As soon as I mention DJ, he gets a strikeout then a groundout with the bases loaded.

He had a higher strikeout rate and lower ground ball rate than Joc Pederson did, throughout the minors.

Sell before the first third of the season (pitchers and advance scouts will find the holes on the second time through), though Coors will help inflate his numbers.

Soler already hit a home run in his place. They will miss his bat because they score 2.2 more runs a game with him since he joined the Cubs.. but they may be the deepest ion the league.
