PayPal at Coin Shows

I haven't been to an actual show probably 10 years. So in that time, as smart phone use has expanded, has electronic payment become common while standing at a dealer's table?

It would not be surprising, lots of retail stores take paypal.

I have allowed a couple of people to use my laptop to pay me with paypal! Have been debating on whether to get a paypal credit card reader for my iphone.

I have paypal, google wallet and dwolla and have never used them at a show...cash and trades with coins/bullion are my preference.

I handed my card to the cashier who swiped it, handed it back, and just stared at me. I asked for a receipt and they said it would be e-mailed to me. I had some discussion about it and that this was an intrusion into my privacy.

Anyway I get home and the e-mailed receipt came in on my PRIVATE e-mail that is not in any way affiliated with any of my cards. Somehow Square hooked up with it. I sent a nasty gram to them and accessed my preferences on their website. Imagine that, I had preference choices on a website I never joined.

After that when I run into a vendor using Square I will comment on it and to my surprise a number of cashiers actually agreed with me about it's intrusiveness.

That's good to hear. I was wondering about all this because I usually forget to hit the ATM along the way or I'll wind up finding something that exceeds the amount of cash I have on me. image

I just chatted with a Dealer last Sunday. He wouldn't go to a show without credit card processing ability. It's a changing world. Get with the program or leave money on the table.

I have been accepting Paypal payments(direct transfers only-no credit cards) at my table for 2 years now-works like a charm.I don't like the credit card thing as,from my previous experiences, some less than honorable folks have a mind to call their cc companies and claim fraud(or whatever) and here comes the chargebacks.....no thanks.

I allow my customers to use a charge card via Square, but I don't advertise it.

Smart customers will negotiate a final price and then want me to eat the fees when I let them use the charge card.

I've wondered how people pay for coins priced at $1000 or higher at shows. It seems unlikely or unwise for someone to be carrying that much cash around. Making a payment via PayPal seems a more practical way to make a big purchase at a coin show.

No - I take cash, gold coins at melt, etc. If they have the money they know where to find a ATM.

I wouldn't necessarily use the word "smart" to describe them unless the dealer lets them get away with it.

So you want to pay 3% more for that coin.

As a collector I'd like ALL dealers at big shows to accept PayPal (negotiating the extra fee into the deal as necessary).

BUT I generally bring cash and bullion to pay, just because...well, some will get this reference:

those who allow paypal because of bad experiences with credit card chargebacks .... you do realize that a thief can use a CC through paypal, and dispute the charge right after selling whatever he bought from you right ? youll never guess whos on the hook for that ... something to think about.

Something that has to be worked out... If I really want it and credit is the only way to get it then I'd have to factor that into my decision.

We generally do not advertise that we take credit cards at shows, but we do accept them. I bring the PayPal card swiper to every show but probably only use it three or so times a year.
