Don't know who makes them, but not very efficient for displaying in retail without a clear window on back of the envelope. The coin would have to be removed to inspect the reverse. The envelope won't last very long with being repeatedly opened and fingered.

I doubt that anyone is still making them. It looks like it is very old. I've never seen one, I've been around since the '60s.

I think it's cool. Never saw that kind. It would surve a purpose for certain raw coins.

I'm with Bill on this one. I have never seen them for sale and I've been around a long time.

Seems like a stamp envelope. Anything that does not show the coin well especially both sides, obsolete.

I suspect you are right. The "number" space in the upper right sounds like a stamp catalog number.

    If you can't "lick 'em"...

May be an outside the CONUS envelope. image

The window seems kinda small for about anything larger than a quarter...there may be a larger window available. Seems right for stamps though, I would think that it would kinda difficult to keep it centered unless you had a block of four and then you could only see the inside corners...I'm rambling...I need coffee. image

My best guess is that they are auction envelopes, with spaces for the auction "Date" and lot "Number". Could be for stamps or coins, I suppose.

Yes, amazingly enough, I've never see one either.

I haven't seen them in 50 years, either.

I doubt that they were for stamps due to the position of the window and for other reasons, like a plastic edge on the inside that could easily tear a stamp.

what are those symbols or letters handwritten on the left of price?

is that a 2x2 in size?

is there anything on the other side?

Considering the price is in pounds sterling, I'd say ask the blokes across the pond.

Several different companies make this type(not exactly as shown, but close) in many sizes. envelopes.com offers printing by request on the envelopes and in various sizes. Have no idea as to affect on silver or copper. Here is an example:

i wonder if a hobby store such as a coin/stamp store could help out on where to go

My grandmother collected coins from the 1940's to 1960's and I never found such an envelope with her items.

I kept a few silver coins in plain brown envelopes and some had some surface damage.

We have a serious number of old farts in this group, myself included, and the fact that none of us have ever seen this envelope in use in a coin-related application must mean that these were never sold in the numismatic trade. I still think that the stamp trade is the most likely origin for it.

I'd buy some of those If they were offered at a dime or so each, provided the clear mylar was inert.

Perfect alternative to a cardboard 2x2, regular paper envelope, or ubiquitious flip that's either flexible and PVCish or stable but brittle/scratchy
