My Barber Quarter for the Variety Type set!

DIMEMANDIMEMAN Posts: 22,403 ✭✭✭✭✭

I cherrypicked this last year at Central States. It's a nice coin. Much better than the pic.

The coin is actually white and lusterous not golden.

Enjoy and tell me what you think. Thanks for looking.

That's a really dramatic over mintmark and the coin looks quite frosty, too.

Tom, this is the variety in the CPG and in the Registry sets. I will use these, but not be limited to them.

Thanks for looking and the kind remarks.

13 attributed through PCGS...I would not call that "common". Do you have one to share?

    Jon...wonder why I have him Blocked ?
He has no point....I had a MS 64 - so he
thought it had to be common. I never see
his posts anymore - unless someone quotes
his post(s). He can't bother me on PM's either.
    He can be infuriating.

    Nice pick up...lousy images though...
but, you already knew that !!

New project for you... find a Center MM
of 1897-S Quarter.... These are far scarcer
    than the D/d 1916's.

    Good luck !

I can't remember what was written about it in the cps or other places, thought you would know since you just picked one up? Also the way in which you wrote it, if a coin is common then can one say it was cherrypicked i.e. does cherrypick typically mean it has to be tough to find or just
the fact that it was found? Trying to get a handle on these barber quarters and the terms used here for consistency, that tis all.

Any variety that is found and bought as a regular issue is considered a cherrypick to me. It doesn't have to be rare or hard to find.

"Cherrypicking" is used to denote finding a variety unattributed or raw for the price of a normal coin. It can also be used to describe buying a high end or undergraded coin for a great price. Perhaps there is no premium associated with this variety, or perhaps there is.
The OP "cherrypicked" it because it was different and sitting in a dealer's case marked 1916-D.
Now, if given the choice between a normal coin and a repunched mintmark, one would have to assume that most people would opt for the latter, all things being equal. Dont you agree?

Great pickup. Not knowing very much at all regarding this series of coins, but that is one dramatic mintmark overstrike. Wow! Looks like two different size "D" mintmarks. When you say your Variety Type Set, do you mean a 7070 or a type set that has only varieties, or what.

Btw, I hope this does not turn to mudslinging. No place for that here.

    Again, beautiful coin.

Thanks Jim. Due to the way the different Type Sets are layed out I have choosen to use the Collectors Showcase under Varieties. This allows the label info to show and allows me to be able to put any coin I want into it.

Posted by realone "Most are familiar with the well known 'CherryPicker's Guide or CPG" but the full title says it all. Cherrypickers Guide to rare die variety", it doesn't say common varieties."

There you have it Alan.......this variety is in the CPG.....so under your rules....this is a RARE coin!

    Nuff said.....MOVE ON!!!!!

By not signing on to the PCGS site immediately, I was able to read the blocked comments.
Slanderous comments, unfounded I might add, are uncalled for.

realone - " It is so difficult to see any rpm here that it shouldn't really matter if it is there or not."

You better look again......it is real noticeable as a RPM as mentioned by others.
  • CharlotteDudeCharlotteDude Posts: 3,146 ✭✭✭✭✭
    Wow...

Dimeman - nice looking Barber. The fact that it's a RPM is interesting and intriguing enough, let alone the fact that the quarter appears to be quite eye appealing is certainly thread-worthy.

Not sure why the evident thread-hijacking here.

Nice coin - cool RPM... let's move one.
