Show and tell...Mercury Dime 1944-D...

I recently purchased a 1944-D Mercury Dime off ebay based on the sellers pic of the reverse.
The pic here is the sellers pics of the obverse and reverse and the close-up was done on my dinolite. In the sellers pic of the reverse the "D" looks like it has the post of a repunched "D" rotated 90 degrees running thru it. The line thru the MM appears to be the post of the under "D" with the turned up tail west of the main post being the serif of the rotated "D". In hand with a glass the MM looks like the sellers pic. I could not capture what my eyes see with the dinolite. But thought I would see what others see. I may or may not send this Dime to James Wiles for his $7 opinion.image

Opinions are welcomed and I am sure they will be varied.

There's clearly something running through the center of the mintmark. It looks to me like it's pretty faint inside the loop but fairly beefy outside the loop. I guess my question is "wouldn't it be about the same width as the actual mintmark". It doesn't appear that thick.

Still definitely something unusual that Wiles should review. You just never know.

Struck over a die chip? Is that possible?

It appears to me a die gouge.

    That may help.

It doesn't look like the '44-D RPM which has the original MM southeast.

Rotation is a fun idea but the perceived under-MM appears too big (though I suppose it might expand somewhat on 2nd striking).

You'd figure die damage would appear on other dimes as well. Maybe they're out there but I can't find one. Still, that would be my guess.

I would lean heavily towards die gouge/die issue etc.

I think it looks pretty neat. image

I agree . . . Looks to me like the MM was punched atop a die gouge. Just can't imagine why this hasn't shown up in the last 72 years!

Need the following OBW rolls to complete my 46-64 Roosevelt roll set:
    1947-P & D; 1948-D; 1949-P & S; 1950-D & S; and 1952-S.
Any help locating any of these OBW rolls would be gratefully appreciated!

I tend to agree with the die gouge theory..... Cheers, RickO
