An unethical business practice?

nankrautnankraut Posts: 4,565 ✭✭✭
1. A "prominent" coin dealer lists numerous coins for sale on his website (not on EBAY). I purchase one. He puts a hold on my credit card balance, but does not send the coin, nor communicate with me. After a couple weeks, I call him to follow up. He states that he no longer has the item, and my credit card will not be charged. I say thank you and move on.

2. About a month later, I see 2 other coins he has listed that I need; so I order them. Same result as above.

3. Now, another month later, I see that he still has all three of these coins listed available for sale.

I believe he has used this ruse in order to peddle my email/phone #, since I'm suddenly getting spam from coin companies I've never dealt with.

FYI, The 3 coins I attempted to purchase are still listed for sale on his site. If you want to know who this is, please PM me.

GRRRR!

some dealers are just slow to update their website. Is that possible?

A merchant can put a pre-authorization hold on your account, but it needs to be followed by a completion within a certain time frame otherwise the pre-authorization hold will fall off.

This is the process when the final amount isn't known, like buying gas at the pump, eating at a restaurant (when a tip can be added), renting a car or staying at a hotel.

This can cause problems when you travel because the holds are above the amounts you think you will be charged and can later get declined when you try to charge something else because of the car and hotel holds.

If you see two transactions on your credit card statement (a charge and a refund) then the dealer did in fact charge your card and then issued a refund later. You won't see holds on your statement.

But selling your info to other mailing lists is unethical and a weasel thing to do.

Why can't you just tell us who this dealer is? Sounds like someone to avoid.

No kidding. If that's their practice, they shouldn't have a business. What is the name of the business and website

If you call and place the order when he has the coin then that coin should be yours. How can he not have it later. Weeks later and you don't have the coin is not a good thing. Did you try to us PayPal?

Hard to tell from the information available. The coins could have been purchased and returned, resulting in the re-listing or the website is simply not updated. The misc coin companies contacting you could be the result of your search engine or prior electronic history. Probably a best practice to call or email to confirm availability prior to purchasing online.

Maybe check your spam box in case they're trying to contact you but the internet is getting in the way?

Seems he stated in the OP that they have his email AND phone number.

If a dealer has the money (ie...credit card info), and needs to get in touch with the buyer, and he has both email and phone number, then a good/reputable dealer would use the phone number after not hearing back, right?

At least, that's how I see it.

If you placed the order through the website, is it possible that the website automatically put the hold on the credit card?

Maybe. I bought a coin from a legitimate dealer a few years ago and it is still on his site.

It really depends on the terms and conditions of the site as to whether you actually bought anything. As others stated, the credit card hold could be automatic and merely part of the offer presented to the dealer - until the offer is accepted (card charged), there's no sale.

At which point you made an offer, through stupidity, neglect, oversight, whatever, it was never accepted nor refused.

    Which brings us to:

Basically, correct - he never accepted the offer.

I am confused, were these offer you made on coins or "for sale buy it now prices"?

I believe your analysis is correct...please PM his information to me.... do not need to deal

  • If the OP calls the seller out in public and the seller is a forum favorite he will be banned.

Just ask "CASMAN", he sent a crummy dealer a private message letting him know his customer service sucks and got bammed a few hours later when the seller told his mamma.

That sounds absolutely ridiculous....I know people, up here in my area, that have terrible business practices. It just so happens they 'learned' from the same other dealer.

Despite poor service and/or late delivery, the joys of doing business remain the same. Find the right business people.
