I suppose PCGS knows....maybe they can tell us.
I'm the Proud recipient of a genuine "you suck" award dated 1/24/05. I was accepted into the "Circle of Trust" on 3/9/09.

I would bet that one of the founders owns it.

I would wager it's been upgraded.

It would likely be worth more as the first slab than as an upgrade.

How would one prove it was first?

I'd think there were "test" slabs assembled to prove the whole process worked (receiving to shipping) before the first officially graded ones were done, probably using low value stuff like ratty 84-O Morgans or even circulation coins.

I know the first coin graded with ANACS when they first introduced the little white slab is a Mercury dime and a board member here owns it.

Got to be a sample coin to introduce PCGS to the world. Isn't 1964 dime on first batch of samples?

I have a few 1964 dime samples and would be happy to know one of them was the first. image

True. But there still had to be a "first".

Whatever it may be, I'm guessing it would be a modern coin? To add to the OP's question, wonder what the first "error or variety" coin was? image

Would be a great question for Don Willis to answer....if indeed there is an answer...Well, there will be an answer... could be no one knows at this time...or, there could be a record.

We need to start a pool to see who can get the closest guess before Don or David provide the answer.

I'm guessing it was a DMPL Morgan, maybe a particularly awesome one in a date/mm that doesn't show up as DMPL often.

Either that or an S-VDB Linc in particularly high grade.
