Redfield Mansion as it sits today...

CCDollarCCDollar Posts: 726 ✭✭✭✭✭
I was in Reno today for Easter and drove by the Redfield Mansion on Mt. Rose Street. The sun was in my eyes so I did the best that I could. The first picture is the mansion with the famous iron gate. The mansion is somewhat small and made from river rock from the Truckee River. It has been abandoned for over forty years but has been well maintained. There are now about two dozen homes built on the property that match the mansion. It is in a nice part of old Reno.

This is the famous iron gate and steps that LaVere walked up with his bags of silver dollars.

This is the right side of the house...I believe the coal shute is under the last window.

That's it...Happy Easter.

I should add that I think the top window is where LaVere sat and looked out...wrapped in many old clothes and rags to keep warm and save money on heat.

Thank you for posting this! I had often wondered what LaVere Redfield's house look like.

To think that bags of these were just thrown down a coal chute and moved around with a grain shovel. 1893-CC (not my coin).

Seeing the house adds another chapter to the crazy story for me.

That house is just plain spooky if you ask me. Thanks for the photos. I see a little stone bench at the top of the flight of stairs, where he probably rested from hauling is load.

Wow - that is awesome! Does anybody know who owns it now? Looks like it would make a great museum!

Interesting old house.... I would bet that not all it's secrets have yet been revealed.

Are those the famous peach trees? I heard a lot of the coins were stained with peach juice.

Disregard the link...I need to learn how to post a link in the future. Everything I know about the mansion is local lore. But...if you google 'who owns the redfield mansion in reno', there is a nice article.

edited to add...The article says that a family member lives there now but the interior looks somewhat bare. The Redfield family and Foundation have done many great things for area residents.

The "mansion" seems dated, old, cold and sad to me, all that silver now dispersed, and the man Redfield is gone forever.....

Interesting and would like to explore. Maybe MD?
