What does Augustus Saint Gauden have in common with Abraham Lincoln?

Hi guy's, I've just learned this recently. For anyone living in the downtown area of my home town Chicago, will probably know this answer more than most? In Grant Park, there is a statue of Abraham Lincoln. The statue was erected in 1926 and guess who sculpted it? Yes, our coin designer Augustus Saint Gauden! I have been living in Chicago for over 55 years, and I just found that out now. I wonder if Abraham Lincoln ever sculpted a statue of Augustus?image

Augustus Saint Gauden was born in 1848 and died in 1907, meaning he died before seeing his design on a $20 gold coin and before his statue of Abe Lincoln went up in Chicago.

Got to see "Lincoln Sitting" sculpture last summer while staying downtown. Took

photos of the castng inscribed with Saint Gaudens name as sculptor. Quite

a contrast between the "Egg" and earlier works of art in your City.

Egg? Do you mean "Bean"? image Yes, your right, a big contrast. Chicago has so much in diverse art all around here.

Yeah, that's a shame he didn't get the pleasure in viewing his work, coin and statue.image

The real sorrow is that we do not let highly qualified artists of TODAY design coins...U.S. circulating coinage is horrible as far as art is concerned. Cheers, RickO

Perhaps no one else on the boards realizes this, but a full bronze statue of the Lincoln that stands in Chicago is going to be placed at the Augustus Saint Gaudens National Historic site this summer. It will be the first major installation since 1997 when the Robert Gould Shaw Memorial was put in place. I attended the Shaw Memorial dedication and will be on-hand for the Lincoln dedication, too.

There's another statue in Lincoln Park(appropriate place) where Augustus sculpted too. It's called the "standing Lincoln". In 1887 he completed it. In his bio, Augustus Saint Gauden, was a tremendous admirer of Abraham Lincoln. At the time of Lincoln's death, Augustus went to see his burial.

At the suggestion of one of the forumites (my apologies for not remembering your name), I went to the St. Gauden's NHP in western New Hampshire on the Connecticut River Valley. This was one of the most beautiful places I've visited. His works must have been inspired by the wonderful views. I suggest people visit here going with a picnic lunch in hand. The grounds are made for this type of relaxation. Thanks for reminding me of this time spent in early fall there.
