How many 89UD Griffeys is enough?

Went to see a collection today and make a possible offer but Im feeling a little overwhelmed. He collected during the boom from 86 to 90s. He believed in multiples and I mean multiples. He has 91 1989 UD Griffeys from 20 9's 71 8-8.5s. Probably 200 1982 Ripken rookies 26 topps from psa 8 to 9 and the rest being fleer and donruss mostly 8's. He bought multiples like 800 count boxes of rookies which included Smoltz, Biggio, Johnson, Sosa, etc. The kicker is he has over 20,000 1987 Topps Bo Jackson rookies in 800 count boxes. Im still in shock over all those Jackson rookies.

What would be a good price for the Griffeys?

How much does he want for all of the 1987 Bo Jackson Rookie cards?

edit: no idea what that junk is at the bottom but i can't seem to edit it.

here is what I see on VCP:

PSA 8s average price is $27.40. As you can imagine, multiple sales per month on the card. For March 2016, price range is $23.50 - $40.00. The average price seems to be a fair indicator of retail value.

PSA 8.5 average price is $33.73. Less sales, but over the past six months the range has been from $24.99 to $45 (BIN). A little more range in the price than the PSA 8s or PSA 9s but most are under $35.

    PSA 9 average price is $52.65. Over 30 sold so far in March ranging from $48.39 to $89 (BIN). 4 sold <$50 (either $48 or $49) and 7 sold above $60. some of those flips look like beckett. looking at their price for a 9, their average is $52.75, which speaks to the consistently of this card at that grade... _28_either="" _24_48="" or="" _24_4929_="" and="" 7="" sold="" above="" _24_60.="" some="" of="" those="" flips="" look="" like="" beckett.="" looking="" at="" their="" price="" for="" a="" _92c_="" average="" is="" _24_52.752c_="" which="" speaks="" to="" the="" consistently="" this="" card="" that="" />

20,000 cards at 1.5 cents a card is only $300. I'd rather go to a Vegas Club and make it rain Bo Jackson rookie cards just for the shear humor in it.

    Way back when in 87
I bought 1500 Jacksons and 500 Will Clarks.
Was supposed to fund my retirement.
    But hard times came calling
    and I'm just growing old.

The Griffeys are not all PSA.

PSA 61 Beckett 30. Seems prices are similar for PSA and Becket on 89UD Griffeys. These were all bought graded he has never subbed a card to PSA.

Not one 10 of the graded? Interesting

Having 20,000 of any one card is impressive. I wonder when / how he acquired them all.

Not sure how to answer your question kirk but I do know one thing and that is I probably would be hesitant to buy anything from a guy who has a thumb that looks like he just removed it from his arseimage

  • While its always cool to see that many rookie cards of the same player, be reminded that those Upper Deck Griffeys where mass produced! I mean they had those presses running 24-7. Be reminded UD was printed sheets of just Griffeys! They had a lot of folks sending damaged Griffey's back in for mint copies ( since he was card #1 in the set his card had a higher chance at being damaged via production). I cant even imgaine how many 89 UD Griffey's are in circulation.

True story, back in the 1990's when that card was selling for $100+ all day long, I attended a really big card show at wisconsin state fair ( by far the biggest show in my area growing up...compare this show to a mini national, Mr Mint all the old big names there). I knew a couple dealers that owned shops who had tables at the show. There was a big buzz about a dealer at the show. I was told this guy just had one monester box (5000) cards. Now tables where super expensive for this show. I was told the story. I walked over to his table where there was a long line of people, all lined up for thier turn. The dealer had 5000 1989 UD Ken Griffey jr's for $100 each, which he sold out after the 3 day show.

Actually he was replacing the window gasket on his car when I arrived and did not have a chance to clean up.

There was a dealer named Jim Carr, advertised in SCD. You could buy thousands
and thousands of any one player in 87. Larkin, Palmeiro,
    Clark, any of the rookies.
Probably a few other dealers you could buy in bulk from also.

So your saying the dealer walked out with $500,000

There was that much cash floating around that weekend just for that 1 card?

I used to hoard cards too, though nothing close to this guy with the Bo Jacksons.

At one point, I had about 400 1988 Donruss Roberto Alomar cards. I felt strongly that Alomar was a lock for the hall of fame after his career was done. I was right about that, but little did I know the 1988 Donruss set would be mass produced unlike any other set, making the card virtually worthless.

That is the story my friend. I wasn't a dealer, but I did witness the guy's table. Again, the State Fair show in wisconsin/milwaukee was a huge show back then.

UD printed an insane amount of product that year, both out the front door and back door, hence the dale murphy rev negative error.
  • More on topic, since you're buying in bulk saving, I would offer him around $40.00 each on the 9's and $25ish on the 8/8.5's.

Great question E...The guy was trying to collect a 100. Also he has many many PSA8 multiples of Boggs, Gwynn, Sandberg, 80 star etc. On a side note he played baseball at Alabama and was drafted in the pros but is now a local school teacher. He wants to start collecting vintage so I am trying to get him started in buying HOF cards. Thanks for the help guys.
