Have you ever bought an upgrade to an existing coin for less money than you paid for the original co

I have found that as soon as I buy a tough/scarce coin, and am thrilled with it, 2-12 months afterwards a nicer one (e.g. better grade, more eye appeal, etc.) comes along at a cheaper price point.

This has happened to me 6 times just in the past 12 months, and most of the time I've pulled the trigger on the nicer coin at a lower price point, and then sold my original coin at a break/even loss, essentially doing dollar cost averaging for the two coins.

Has this ever happened to you, and how did you handle it? Did you stick with you original coin? Did you buy the new one? What did you do with the original one?

Curious....

Yes. Frequently it has been a cherrypick but not always.

I normally flip the coin it replaces. image

It happens quite a bit, like keyman64 mentioned, when collecting varieties, there are times when the unattributed AU58 FS-999 is less expensive than an attributed AU50 FS-888 (fictitious FS- numbers).

Or when you find a more common date in better versus a rarer date in lessor condition.

This is not unusual in the current down market.

Very common in my classic commem collecting! But the trend has been downward...so not too hard to do.

Almost all of larger coins in my 12 piece gold type set have went that route in the last year of so.

This hasn't happened that I recall.

Paying less than MS 64 money for a MS 65 Early Walker would be an incredible feat!

I would gladly write THAT check (if the coin was decent).

Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Almost always with moderns. Few exceptions there for me image

On a few classics, yes image

I seem to be that sucker that waits and watches them go for $xxx price, then when I feel ready....having all the data and watching for awhile....I go after the coin, lose out a few times and finally win for $xxx+xx%......then the next few that come out go for less than I paid.......

Sometimes I buy it thinking it is an anomaly and I can sell one for a little more.

Yeah, no. Doesn't seem to happen for me.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
