1965 SMS included a history lesson

A few months ago I bought a 1965 SMS from my local shop and it included some interesting literature in the envelope. The envelope itself is also of interest as it gives an insight of the origin of the set having "Aug. 1968 Picked up at Denver Mint" written on it. This is all a very nice added bonus because the reason I bought the set is because the dime has very strong die clashing which I thought was very cool.

Anyway, I know it's not the uber-valuable coins that many post in here but I think it's interesting.

That info is a bit incomplete but still interesting.

The mint produced between 40-60 1964 SMS sets as well.

The 1964 SMS coins sell for hefty sums these days.

  • Thats odd. There were no m.m. on any coinage during 65,66,67.The sms coinage are the only coinage during those years that are the only coinage we know the mint/assayers office and the packaging indicates the assay office struck at or the packaging is the m.m. .Who ever typed up this document needs to get the history correct. If its a 1965 sms hang on to the envelope.

I was under the impression that SMS sets in 65, 66, and 67 were struck at the San Francisco "Mint". I'd be surprised to find out it was actually in Denver. But nothing is beyond belief

There used to be a privately-run booth that sold coins at street level just outside the Denver Mint where the public tour let out. I strongly suspect that somebody who took the tour bought this set there, "at the Denver Mint."

Interesting! I like the parts where it says, when Silver was $1.29 an ounce and 27 pounds and a half of Gold is only worth $14,000 in 1967. That's a pound, not ounce! A little different today, huh? .image

Sorry about the delay, here is the dime. The damage looking bits on the reverse is on the cellophane.

The Duboce Ave address is where many of my sets were mailed from. I also received sets from Philadelphia, but I don't recall ever receiving an order from a Denver address.

As I said, it may have been purchased at the privately-run booth outside the Denver Mint. Back when we ran ANA Summer Seminar students through the press floor we exited on the West side, same as the tourists on the catwalk tour, and some of the students bought coins there as souvenirs.

At one time the Denver Mint did have a store, inside the mint at the end of the tour, where coin items could be purchased. I do not think it unreasonable that a 1965 SMS or any SMS set could be purchased at that store since they were not limited to only selling products that they produced. It was, after all, actually a US Mint Store.

I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.
