Won 1 Lost 5...couldn't pass up this 1859 $5 Half Eagle at the sold for price...mintage of just 16K ...with only an estimated 75 survivors...if this coin had a C or a D it would be worth many multiples...but it is just a lowly P...so I'll enjoy it for a while...and then probably sell it years from now for what I paid for it...if I'm lucky...LOL...

What do you think you can retail it for? Did you get for around its wholesale of $650 (CDN)?

That number couldn't be farther off from wholesale. You must be using grey sheet.

$650 is not a real number. A coin in a lower grade went for $975 6 years ago. In this grade it's more like $1400 but this date stickered is worth more in my opinion.

The PCGS price guide for a 1859 AU 50 is $1500...which is about what I paid with Heritage's buyer premium...what could I retail it for?...probably $1300...LOL...not a great short-term investment...many Philly minted $ Half Eagles are very under-valued...and not in high demand...they are definitely not as sexy as their branch mint D, C, S, O, CC cousins...1859 was not a civil war year...very few people attempt the entire date/mint set of Half Eagles...etc....etc...

But IMHO one can't go too far wrong at $1500...the bidding for the 1838-D lost me way before $28,000...

Also your coin is just one of two stickered at au-50 for those that care about those things. Again, nice pick up

Congrat's. Nice coin from the pics. The last two auction sales before this was $1400. I don't know if they were stickered. Probably not. These are not $650 wholesale. $1500 was probably the correct retail price

I admire your taste. If it looks good in hand then you did very well.

Thanks guys...yes I hope it looks nice in hand...I know one really should view all auction lots or at least have representation...but on a smaller purchase like this one...I am trusting the pics, the third party grading and the CAC seal...worse case is I don't like it...I sell it off quickly and lose a few hundred bucks...

Mark --Yes $1500 was the right price...my point about this mint/date being the step sister is that the 1859 is tied in relative rarity in the Half Eagle Series at #34 along with the 1861-D and the 1870-CC...which are listed at $37K and $40K respectively in AU50...both of those coins have good stories...the 1859 does not...

I like the date along with the 49, 50, 58 and 60 which are all about of the same price/value. Steveben owns the finest known from the Milas sale.
