coins that are different

Somehow there are coins that are different than anything else we saw so far.

Some of them look even unreal.

Im talking about coins like

1 Cent 1807/6 Red

1 Cent 1793 Wreath 68 RD

1/2 Cent 1794 67 RB

10 USD 1795 66+

The 1 Cent 1807 was a birthday gift coin that someone received to his birth in 1807 and was saved in the same family until then. It is really red and it looks like nothing I have seen before. And it has a story and pedigree until 1807 when it was made.

I wonder what is the story about the 1793 68 RD Wreath cent, anybody knows ?

The 1/2 Cent 1794 67 looks too good to be true and thats also why the dealer who bought in in the 1970ies first thought it is a replica. It went to switzerland probably in 1794 and was saved there until discovered around 1972.

And the same is true for the 1795 ten in 66+, I looked at all the eagles over the last 15 years, PCGS 65s, NGC 65s, 64s, 63s, this coin just looks different than anything else.

Are there any other coins that come to your mind that fall into this category ?

Im not talking about high grades only, Im talking about coins that when you compare them to all others that exist, make a difference.

Red Copper from the 18th Century is highly unlikely in natural state, unless it has been cleaned, in which it would look "unreal". Images would help of course help, but "if it sounds too good to be true..." There are exceptions to the rule.

There are some "unreal" Varieties out there due to the fact that it was really expensive to make dies for production. I have one of those 1807/6 Large 7 Large Cents and it is wayyyy obvious of the resourcefulness of the Mint staff to keep using a readily available die and just punch over the previous year's digit and keep pounding away the current years coinage.

Probably my favorite "unreal" variety is the 1844-O 50C MPD FS-301 WB-103 talk about a WILD repunched date (RPD)!

I viewed the 1795 $10 in hand last year at Stack's table at the ANA. It should be the standard for what a true UNMESSED WITH, early gem gold piece should look like.

Those coins demonstrate the true beauty of early American coinage that has been properly

    preserved. Cheers, RickO

Read through this thread and how these coins were kept in pristine condition!

A few of these are AMAZING.

I can't comment intelligently on this as I have never seen coins of this caliber in person.

Never been to a decent size show and the B&M's I've gone to don't have anything like that.

I look forward to eventually seeing a few late 1700's and early 1800's coins with luster.

When I first heard of people commenting on the luster, etc of very early US coins, I really didn't believe it.

I have no doubt that the ones listed and others are "different" and that pics are no substitute for in person viewing.

I need to get out more. image

Thank you for resurrecting this thread. It was very interesting how Watt preserved the coins he produced with a steam powered coin press. The coins shown are spectacular, just like they were minted yesterday.
