Whiny Wednesday Thread: Post your weekly whines/annoyances/grievances here

mercurydimeguymercurydimeguy Posts: 4,625 ✭✭✭✭
For the sake of my own sanity and ongoing enjoyment of the hobby, I decided (as a New Year's resolution) to confine my coin whining to once per week.

I then thought this morning, why not democratize my Whiny Wednesday to the CU Forum, in case others want to take the pledge/oath with me, and perhaps post their grievances here for others to commiserate and/or learn from.

Anyhow, if this is lame them disregard. If not, then post away image

---------------

First official Whiny Wednesday post....

I hate when I see coins I need for my PCGS Registry Set in other holders, at PCGS price points, knowing darn well that the coin will not cross at a commensurate level, yet the seller wants PQ/premium pricing.

There are at least 2 coins I'd pull the trigger on today. One particular one is nice and is like an MS62+/MS63- that I'd love to own, but it happens to be in an NGC MS64 holder. The seller wants 1.5x PCGS MS64 Retail money cause it's a scarce coin in MS64. The problem is that it's not an MS64 and he won't budge on the price (to say 1x NGC MS64 Retail price), which I would then pay, albeit begrudgingly.

We've been going back/forth for nearly 2 years on the same coin -- he still has it in inventory, and I told him if he put it in a PCGS MS64 holder I'd pay him the asking price. He is a very prominent but old time dealer -- and so the coin still sits in the NGC MS64 tomb.

I told him jokingly that if he really wants to collect the coin to take it out of his inventory image

When someone calls me and tells me they have a large amount of silver dollars to sell. I tell them great bring them in and I will give you a price

They walk threw the door and put 10 tubes full of Ike dollars down. I tell them that none of these particular ikes are silver..... then they proceed to scream at me and tell me I have no idea what I'm talking about and that these coins are all 90 % silver and I'm the dumbest coin dealer alive. Then I tell them that I would be more then happy to buy these for 1.10 each and they continue to flip out telling me they are 90% silver. I then proceed to tell them that they should take them to another dealer and let them buy these "90%" percent dollars and they leave. The next morning they walk in and tell me they want to sell them to me for 1.10 each and after being screamed at by these people not one time was an appoligy offered to me

Whining is repulsive.... on the other hand... good 'why coin dealers drink' stories are great.

Most of the whining here seems to be about ebay, USPS or software. Over and over and over again. Cheers, RickO

On my submission completed Monday I included an 1897 "O" Morgan that I knew was cleaned. I fully expected Unc. "Details" "Cleaning"........ I got AU 58.

Now the new Gray Sheet says this coin in AU 58 should bid for $300. How much you wanna bet it would have sold easier and for more money as Unc "Details" rather than market graded as it was?

I had a guy in today who I asked to help me hang some stained glass windows that I purchased to spruce up the shop. He wanted an ounce of silver per hour. image He hung around for an hour watching me. I wanted to call the fire department, for a minute. Sucks climbing ladders and using a screw driver… but I do love working.

Not really. That is precisely what I did when I was populating my 7070 album, including the gold page. Would I do that if they were 65 CAC? No

    ????

Not sure what that comment (which can certainly be true in some/many cases) has with what you quoted....

The way I read the OP was that he would buy it in the NGC plastic IF it was priced at what he thought the coin actually grades at. He believes it is in overgraded plastic at the moment, but priced at the higher level and at PCGS prices.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Want to know what grinds my gears (in Peter Griffins voice)?

I live in New England and I feel like we are ignored bythe MAJOR coin show circuit. Other than the NY INC (International Numismatic Convention) there are no MAJOR coin shows in our neck of the woods. New England is one of the most densely populated regions and has a large amount of the countries wealth. so what gives? I'd like to attend some coin grading classes, attend some nerdy seminars, but I'm not going to travel to Baltimore, Florida, California or Colorado Springs (for the summer seminar) to do that. There are plenty of nice sate of the art convention centers between Newark/NYC/Hartford/Providence/Boston to hold these!

Don't get me wrong, the Bay State show and the Mansfield Numismatic Society Annual Show are great, but they can't offer what the Major coin shows can...

I'll second this, there are a handful of major midwest and west coast dealers whom I have never met because they never have any reason to come to this part of the country for shows. For a few years there was a good show in Stamford, CT that began to draw national dealers but it died out after a few years. Now I work right across the street from the hotel where it was held, I'd like nothing better than to see a show come back here.

Ebay frosted my orbs so bad the other day that I cancelled all store items , ended every auction that had no bids, sold 90% of my holdings in same, and bought 250 shares of company X @ $9.13
X= $12.35, currently. Not much, but a hit here, and a whack there.

Dave, you should consider your reply from the perspective of everyone who would attend a show in Maine. the reason so many shows are held in Baltimore and Long Beach is the location and accessibility to such a large population.

I understand why there are no major shows in Maine, but not NYC/Hartford/Boston. Comparing Maine to Boston or NYC is not apples to applesimage. There are 10,000,000+ people within a 3-4 hour drive of Hartford/NYC/Boston and these cities are the epicenter of the financial services industry, which means people with $$$$$$$ for the coin show sponsors, dealers, TPG'ers and other vendors. This could also re-invigorate old/new collectors if a big coin show pops up in a nearby city that hasn't had a show in a while. This could also help the dealers/bourse activity if new collectors/buyers introduced. Sometimes change is goodimage

Last time I checked, the population of Boston is bigger than Baltimore and has great public transportation and hotel and convention accommodations (busways, the "T" and Logan Airport) so that shouldn't be an issue... image

I'm not trying to say that all major shows should be in New England, but from my perspective I feel left out and I'm sure I'm not the only one in New England that feels that way. I'm pretty sure there are users here that live in NYC (I know its not considered New England), CT or VT/ME or NH that would be happy to spend a few hours on the road to go to a major show hosted in Boston or NYC instead of spending 1/2 their coin budget on a plane ticket to get to a show in Baltimore or Long Beach....
