The State Quarter Program was not all what it was supposed to be and several of the quarters have been found in my till over the years. At first it was unusual, then it became more frequent. Unusual nevertheless...unless it was Silver

Yes, I too have found several of these in the wild. This was many years ago too! Before the series crashed. I was very surprised to find these(about 12, all at one time)at my local bank. I seen them in the cashier's tray and asked if I can exchange for cash, she said ,"sure." The only thing about these in the wild is that many are scuffed up pretty bad.

I've found about 10 proof quarters over the years.
The most exceptional was a 1968 in "VG" that I found back in the late-'90's. There were a couple others that had lost a substantial amount of luster.
People overestimate how "common" some of these coins are. The sets have been getting busted up all along and many of the coins are spent or suffer degradation or loss.
I'd be surprised if even half of all the '68 proof quarters survive in pristine condition or in the set. As regards those in the set a significant number (15%+) are tarnished or culls.

And think how valuable the set would be when completed!

Of course there are far more sets than buyers.

Back when the Atlantic City casinos actually used coins, I found a few proof Kennedy half dollars at the slots.
I'll bet there are a lot of proof $1 coins running around out there, they just don't get out much.
