Clearly Separated Doubled Die 2015 cent identified - new pics added

From NN article for anyone interested.

Rodger Ryan is credited with finding what might be the strongest doubled die known so far on the date of a Lincoln cent for the entire 21st century! Only the 2006 Lincoln cent: DDO-001 shows overall stronger doubling of the outer design elements and this new one still has it beat for the doubling on the date.

First reported to John Wexler, news of the 2015 cent variety quickly spread to at least one of the error-variety coin related Facebook pages, but it is still little known to most others and just missed getting into the newly released Cherrypickers’ Guide To Rare Die Varieties 6th Edition, Volume II by Bill Fivaz and J.T. Stanton (edited by Michael Ellis).

According to Wexler, the coin shows, “Strong doubling spread to the SE … on the date and on the letters of LIBERTY. A lesser spread shows on IGWT (In God WE Trust) with the spread increasing from left to right.” It’s listed by him as: 2015 1¢ WDDO-006 and as a “Best Of” variety.

Doubling on the new 2015 doubled-die cent is strongest on the date, in LIBERTY and the UST of Trust.

Doubling in "LIBERTY."

That is a really strong doubled die that shows extremely nice separation on the motto and the date.
These should be popular in the future, as it's far and away the post significant doubled die since 1995. Well, in my opinion anyway!
They are actually popping up in different parts of the country, too. Not terrible scarce to find one to purchase right now.
    Thanks for posting

Sweet! That's very exciting. I wonder how common or uncommon it will turn out to be.

Very neat coin and something I will definitely look for. Does anyone know the rough geographical area where the discovery coin was found? The NN article posted back in December, does anyone know of any additional discoveries, or sales of correctly atributed specimens?

On the surface, at $20ea (roll of 50 for $995), it sounds good....but, looking at the pictures, and the description stating that they are all like that, I will pass.

I don't want/need that many and I don't want any that have that ugly spotting.

Agreed. Terrible pic of a very spotty coin. I just sent the link to show that although the doubling is strong, these may turn up to be plentiful. Kind of like the 1995 ddo.
Very significant variety, none the less.

One of the biggest reasons that the 1995 DDO is so plentiful in high grade is that news of the variety broke in February of 1995, well before most of the coins hit commerce. The numismatic press also reported exactly where the coins were found, including the dates on the boxes coming from the Mint, greatly simplifying the search. One of the earliest reported examples was found near my home in Bridgeport, CT, so I was able to hit banks up and down the CT coast buying boxes. I ended up pulling about 8 examples from those boxes, while folks in other areas like Florida found them by the hundreds.

By contrast, the 2015 DDO was reported in December, when all of the coins for the year were minted and most were well dispersed into commercial channels. That's why I was asking if any sources cited where the first examples came from, to try and narrow down the size of the haystack.

I believe the original find, from the gentleman named in the article, was in TN. But I do not know that for a fact. I have been told by the 1st Ebay seller that his were discovered in TN. Same fellow? I don't know.

Interesting info, thanks for sharing. I found three listings on eBay, the one above and a few more for indivdidual coins from two other sellers. The three auctions ship from Auburn, ME; a northern suburb of Boston, MA; and Schenectady, NY. It's circumstantial evidence but it does seems central / northern New England might be a good place to look.

Ought to inspire sales of magnification devices. Now where did I see that scanning electron microscope?
  • DCWDCW Posts: 7,566 ✭✭✭✭✭
I am pretty sure TN is ground zero for these. My example was given to me by a friend who lives there that had pulled 3 or 4 in his searches.
Good luck to all who care. You really dont need much magnification at all to see this one. Unless you're blind or don't care to learn something new.

By the time I get thru looking at 10 rolls of these, I may need a microscope to read a newspaper. lol

I like the one papi shows but not much on the one that sold on ebay for $995. Hope the buyer comes out ok.

Has anyone on the forum found one yet?

Well, some of us have better eyesight. Lol. This DDO can easily be seen when roll searching, and the separation lines can clearly be seen under bright light. No electron microscope required.

Your right Papi, using a Loupe is just fine! I went through a few, probably about 60 or 70.(that's each, not how many rolls) Nothing yet, though. I will relentlessly, be hunting. This is a great modern find. Esp. for us Lincoln cent lovers. Right, Papi? I'll post if I find something.-joeyimage

When you think of it, it's probably the strongest D.D. in the 21st. Century on ANY denomination, thus far!
