What kind of glue works on PCGS Slabs?

GRANDAMGRANDAM Posts: 8,743 ✭✭✭✭✭
I have some PCGS Slabs with chipped stacking tabs (see post on USPS problem)

I have the chips and want to glue them back in place. In the past I tried just regular Super Glue but it didn't work.

Anyone know what kind of glue would hold?

Thanks, GrandAm

I think reholder is the best solution. I recently sold a PCGS slabbed coin($2k value) on eBay that had a very small crack in it. The customer demanded $100 credit or return the coin. We settled on $50.

That's the reason, (and only reason), that I actually prefer NGC holders. More substantial, better design.

As for the glue, I'm not sure anything will do the job. Small surfaces, and prone to stress. So even if you DO get them to stick on, they'll be prone to breaking off again with very little force.

I'd be looking at epoxy instead of glue.

A 2 stage epoxy should liquid weld the part back on permanently.

Would the next buyer be justified to be concerned to see that holder had a piece glued back on ?

Well that is the problem,,,,, the chip is just visual,,,,, no chance the coin has been removed.

I am waiting on a call back from the seller.

The silver bars should have been seperated from the slabs in the shipment.

On a brighter note I did receive these cool sticky notes as a free gift with my purchase.

I would not touch the stuff if it is an expensive coin. Just pay the reholder fee.......

It's not intended for gluing acrylic or even Gorillas.

I can pretty much guarantee that Gorilla glue will not work because it foams as it sets.

If super glue did not work, it is probably because the plastic surfaces were too smooth for the glue to get any "bite".

    I might try two things.

    1) lightly sand or roughen the mating surfaces to be joined - I realize this might be a bit difficult - and try the super glue again.

    2) I have had some luck with the UV curable glues on the market now - Bondic is one, but there are others - but I'd still sand the surfaces.

Good luck - let us know if you are successful.

I have used the UV curable epoxy (?) recently on several items - not slabs - and it has

worked very well. Worth a try.... Cheers, RickO

I'd be more concerned about any vapor from the glue finding it's way deeper into the holder and affecting the coin.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

Don't even think about using glue. You are just asking for trouble.

If the slab plastic is acrylic, it seems like a super glue would work as it is acrylic as well (cyanoacrylate).

I have had some success with superglue & PCGS slabs IIRC

The glued piece on the slab would look WORSE IMHO and could break off easily in the future.

I would also worry about glue chemicals leaching onto the coin and causing damage to the coin itself.

Policy on fixing holders is currently being written. More than likely it will be a Capital ™ offense.

Reholder. Shoot, for only a little more money get it regraded. Maybe you will get lucky. Either will get you the nice, newest PCGS holder.

It will be tough to upgrade when all the coins are MS70 grade already.

Just heard back from the seller and I will be shipping the entire 7 coins back at the sllers expense and they will replace the coins with new ones.

Thanks for all the opinions and advice.

I would get chemical vapors from glue no where near a coin.
