One of the twice annual Tristar shows in Houston is this weekend. I've started setting up the past couple years, as a way to try and turn some of my inventory and generate cash for continued collecting.
Have done pretty well in the past, selling mostly autographs but also a few cards. Took a different approach in the past 12 months with my eye toward the show. I'd been buying mostly HOF RCs in all the sports, PSA 8s and 9s for anything post 1975 and PSA 4/5/6 types of the vintage stuff.
Had a great Friday to start the show, sold some things like a Gretzky PSA 8 RC, a couple Griffey Upper Deck 10s, a couple Elway PSA 9s, several 1986 Fleer 9s like Barkley, Olajuwon, etc., most of my 60s Clemente mid-grades (6s and 7s), a couple UDA Jordan jerseys I've had for a few years, several other things.
Saturday started slow, but eventually made a couple big sales - 2000 Contenders Brady BGS 9/10 and a T206 Cy Young PSA 4. Was feeling AWESOME, had made plenty of cash and was generally just having a good time talking to people and looking at the occasional few cards for sale (mostly modern autos that were overpriced). And then...
Have you ever had one of those "I'd give everything in my case for that card!" moments? Well, this one may be as close as I'll ever get to that. In a combination of trade/cash, I basically blew out 80% or so of my inventory of cards for these. Drumroll please...

UDA holo and cert from one of the camps in 2000 - so it's a SOMEWHAT vintage signature as well!

Nice! Did those cards just walk up to your table or did they come from other dealers?
Surprisingly both actually. It was roughly half and half. The walk ups were a couple guys I've gotten to know these past couple years, I knew they had great collections, and I've just stayed in touch and "talked shop" with them - never really expected anything but was honestly just hoping to get an invite to see some their cards. One of them I'm pretty sure has a high end Mantle collection and a couple mid-50s graded sets that aren't on the registry. We are talking PSA 8s or better across the board, HUGE cards! I'd just like to look at them, you know? Anyway they brought in a handful of extras this show, I had a couple things they were interested in, they had SEVERAL I was interested in and couldn't even get, but we were able to work out deals pretty quick.
Congrats on your pick ups. The MJ RC Auto is incredible. Are you going to sub it?
Good question. Because I was originally an autograph collector, I knew instantly what the MJ was. I knew it was a relatively early camp signature and it had the holo and the certificate from UDA. From an authenticity standpoint, there's no real reason to sub it as there's nothing really to gain. However, there probably is some benefit to getting it in a slab. The card itself is probably like a 5 or so, there is some touch on corners and wear on edges. For auto'd RCs, I prefer the blue flips anyway. Not sure what I will do, as I'm not crazy about plunking down several hundred dollars just to slab it. Not sure what it will cost to slab it but I assume it's a lot.
T222's PSA 1 or better

They're all nice, but the Aaron RC and Matty white cap are top notch. Congrats!
This is what stood out to me as well, along with the Koufax.
Great pickups! One of these days you need to come to Waxahachie for lunch and some Mexican food and a courthouse tour.
You know it! A trip to see the courthouse is very high on my list.
