Where can I get a coin appraised?

I have a 1999 P Delaware quarter experimental alloy planchet type 2 coin. It doesn't have the copper in the middle. I live in the Atlanta area and I would like to get it certified. Does anyone know of an appraiser in my area? I would post a picture but I don't know how.

    .

you need a specialist. i dont know anyone in that area but unless you really know what you are doing, you need a numismatist you can trust. (aka, knows how to asses value, cost etc)

i think this is the first i'm hearing of what you have and i kind of pride myself on knowing these things. image

    post a picture?

    Contact Bill Fivaz

He is here in Atlanta and a google search should connect you. I would help more but off to a show at 3 AM in the morning. image

I question how you know it is not a copper core. Many times the copper does not show on the edges.

    Have you weighed it yet?

Pics are easy to post once you have a photobucket account (free account)

99.99% chance it has been silver or platinum plated. The telemarketers/infomercials sold a lot of that crap.

Not sure. Don't know of any appraisers in Atlanta. Maybe send it to Fred Weinberg via the "error submission" level at PCGS. Best bet yet.

I concur with that advice, EoC, likewise.
  • Ok I will weigh it. Thanks for all the advice...
  • Obviously plated. The TV hucksters sold a ton of sets over the years and secondary market is less than zero. Had a gold plated set and spent them. Always fun to see the reaction of cashiers that actually notice them. The silver and platinum plated go unnoticed but the gold! Ahhhh

Tintracker---How did you get this coin? If you got it in circulation, it's unlikely to be a rare trial strike. Also, unless this coin has been slabbed by one of the major grading services it will have no value above its face value in the marketplace.

Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.

I agree, if you have some history that gives you a good idea that is what you have your chances are much more likely to be successful.

If it was found in change at McDonalds, you most likely have a plated HSN 'collectible'

Posting pictures and physical details here would be a great first step.... otherwise send it to

Bill Fivaz or Fred Weinberg.... Cheers, RickO
  • Ok, I weighed it. 6 grams.......
  • Thanks. I will work on that....
  • Got it as change from credit union.

Said with an excess of certitude - however, you may be right. Still...
