Interesting piece.... not for me at that price... I find errors interesting but cannot personally

    justify the prices. Cheers, RickO

I normally like varieties and mint errors, but this one does not do it for me. Cool combination...it may the price (just south of four figures) that puts me off.

In 2010, the Goldbergs held the auction of Part III of Dan Holmes' large cent collection, this part devoted to errors, counterfeits, altered coins, etc. There were more than 500 error coins in that sale.

There are far more Large Cent errors then Half Cents. VG seems to be a pretty commonly encountered grade level for Large Cent mint errors as they just continued to circulate. Since mint error collecting didn't really take off until the 1950's no one at the time pulled any high grade examples out of circulation with striking issues. So when you do run across a Large Cent mint error in AU or MS which was set aside it's something special. I'm not sure if there is much of a market at VG unless someone new decides to collect these by date. As I see them year after year growing stale in dealer inventories. On many TPG examples surface conditions are overlooked in favor of the error.

Sean: Try Bryce Brown (he posts as Preturb). He has copies of the softcover versions of the Holmes sales (Pt. I-IV) for sale individually every now and then.

Interesting, in the Goldberg sale of Dan Holmes part III

lot 458 listed it as VG8 with an estimated value of $500 - up.

    He had some great errors!

In the same catalog they auctioned a huge group from

the Davy Collection of Half Cents Errors. Also terrific.

    Both wonderful study resources.
