I bought this 1960 silver quarter, Is it a toned quarter? If so how much is it worth???

Hi, My name is Andrew. I'm 12 years old and I love collecting old coins and bills, (mostly US money) I used to be a Coin Talk member, but now I have joined this forum.

    Yes it is a 1960 silver quarter, yes it is toned, and it is worth about $4.

    Based on the original poster's question about whether that's a toned quarter, I have a feeling they're going to be disappointed with a value estimate of $4. (I would have estimated $3, myself, but whatever).

    I hope that the original poster follows up with more information about what they were expecting to hear. That could be educational for everyone...

    Pretty colors on the obverse, upper portion, yet the carbon on the obverse lettering is a killer.

    Half the fun of coin collecting is dreaming about what you might find or wondering about things you have. Keep dreaming and keep searching because one of these days you are going to find something big. Just to give you an example, I found a 1922 plain Lincoln cent in a jar of wheat cents when I was a kid. I sent it in for grading and it came back VF-20. That was my best all time find. I also found a 1979 proof set with the more valuable Susan B Anthony dollar in it. Treasures are out there. You just have to be patient, educate yourself on what is valuable, and keep searching.

    Andy1234, how much do you think your 1939 quarter is worth? Try to come up with a number on your own, and justify your answer. If you plan on buying coins, you need to have some idea of their worth, or you're in for a world of hurt...

    One of the quickest ways to see what your coin is worth is to enter the date and type into eBay. Once the search pulls up the results click on the button on the left hand side that shows only "sold listings". Make sure that you are looking at a coin that is around the same grade and with the same mint mark. This should be a quick and fun way to start looking up some of your coins.

    BTW, if that is your hand holding your quarter, you should know that the way to hold a coin is with a thumb and index finger on the rim of the coin. The skin on your fingers and hand have oils in/on them that will, over time, tone up your coin with fingerprints etc. Generally speaking, visible fingerprints on a coin will lower the value of the coin. By holding the rim of a coin you are not putting your fingers on the main coin surfaces, e.g. the obverse (front) and reverse (rear).

    Hi Andrew, it would be worthwhile to check the reverse for the scarcer type B reverse.

    This is the reverse used for proof coins.

    Some silver coins from these dies were used from 1956-64 to strike regular issue coins, and they're worth more.

    Easiest thing for me to spot is the separation of E and S in STATES.

    If the bottom of the E and S almost touch, it is not the proof rev.

    If there is a clear separation of the two letters, it's the better type B.

    Your coin looks decent, might get a small premium from a rabid toning enthusiast.

    Keep looking and enjoying coins. I hope you learn to enjoy our great hobby.

    There's truly something to interest everyone, and you don't need a huge budget to get started.
