Peace Dollar Set Question

ajaanajaan Posts: 17,526 ✭✭✭✭✭
I've recently decided to put together a Peace Dollar set in circulated condition. I've never done this set and I figured with silver being so low it would be a good time to start.

I bought the 1921 and 1928 online but I want to get the other coins at the local coin shows we have here in the Buffalo area. Went to a show last Sunday and checked out prices of common date circulated Peace Dollars. It seems they are being offered at $20. each which is almost double silver value.

Is this the selling price in other parts of the country? What does your local dealer sell these for? B.T.W. I was able to pick up 2 coins for $17. each but these were from a dealer I've done business with before and I think he was giving me a break on the price.

I think you were given a nice break at $17 each for common Peace dollars. With silver at $14 an ounce, there is a bit under $11 dollars in silver in a Peace Dollar. However, you must also take into account the numismatic value associated with the coin. That is why places like APMEX are selling them at about $19 dollars. Look at closed eBay auctions.

The other question is what level of circulated are you looking to collect. There is a major difference between VF30 and AU55 in coins like the 1934-S in terms of price. Circulated Peace Dollars with good eye appeal often contain a premium as well. I had a set of circulated (AU) Peace Dollars that I quite enjoyed. Have fun with your set!!

I'm looking more for price than grade on the set. So G-F coins are fine with me.

Remember, the dealers have pre-dip money in those coins.... so will not be very forgiving

    on price....Cheers, RickO

Are you saying dealers bought the coins when silver was higher so they won't sell coins for a loss?

$20 is fair.....sometimes you might catch a break (as it sounds like you did) but $20 is about the going rate

At local show here in NH I could have bought 10 for $180 for them. So yours at 20 each is about right.
