Local B&Ms still quiet

bestdaybestday Posts: 4,242 ✭✭✭✭
I visited several Chicago area B&Ms over the last days .. only action in B&Ms was mailing Ebay auction sales ... another large dealer store was empty ..where 2 years ago would be filled with dealers .....My dealer friend layed off 2 people because of slow traffic.. How is action in other parts ?

For the last 4 years in business (it closed 18 months ago), my local B&M hardly sold anything over the counter. It was basically a rented space to buy coins/bullion/scrap gold and to ship out ebay packages.

Dead in a couple of shops I frequent in the northwest. Bullion is moving though people are buying the dips it seems.

Ditto, primarily Gold & Silver exchanges...they exchange their gold & silver for your money. They pay next to nothing for coins and want the moon for the ones that they do have.

Both shops here in Fargo, ND seem to be doing well. Weather has been keeping people at home for much of the last 2 weeks. I think the coin show at the end of the month here in town will be a real tell for the strength of the local market. At the coin club meeting last night we talked about the show and we are 1 table away from a full house of 58 dealers; our average for this show is 45. Our last show in November had a record turnout as well.

As for rare coin sales here in the shop no real drop offs, I still tend to do much of my business on CCE and our ebay store which is quite diverse in what we list.

Shops around me, in the Seattle area, that I have been to, seem to think the high prices they are asking are still ok to ask.

No traction, no selling, but still wanting the high prices.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Coin inventory is sparse, not much bullion wise either at the pawn shops and LCS in my area of New England. Not many people are selling right now, so stores must be feeling squeezed....

Would the increase in dealers attending your show have anything to do with Minnesota bullion regulations?

things are slow here, also, a fact I have been trying to get acknowledgement about for some time. apparently the river of denial has run dry to expose the truth.

Hard to say I know many customers were coming here to avoid the sales taxes on bullion. As for the reporting and tax collecting I haven't had anyone really ask about it. Not that I feel required to enforce another state's arbitrary laws.

I believe that some Minnesota dealers held their shows in Iowa, to get around the Minny bullion requirements.

Find me a numismatist who doesn't like quiet, and I'll find you a Barber shop that doesn't like gossip.

find me a B&M dealer who likes to have a quiet, empty shop and I'll show you a dealer who will probably be closed in a year or two.

Good point. One which I've never thought of before.

Think out the future..... shops and shows die out because everyone is buying on the net... the only problem is where will the folks who sell on the net purchase the material?

You're invited to a nice quiet, empty sit-in here. Going on the 7th year. I may have to charge you for the coffee, though.

I have no empirical evidence, but my feeling is that the Web has taken coin shopping (as well as a significant amount of any type of shopping) away from the B & M environment. B & M shops are great for buying (for a whole host of logistical reasons), the internet is where it is at for selling. I know I buy everything I can on Amazon because it is a major convenience in terms of security, selection and secure transactions.

It is not just coin shops.... stores in the local mall are closing... Macy's, Radio Shack, a few others...and no one moving in.... between the economy and the internet, brick and mortar businesses are taking a major hit. Cheers, RickO

Just got off the phone with a top registry Roosevelt dime collector. He wants to know of the 3 1982 (No P) MS 66 in PCGS holders , what he should do with the one in the original "First Generation" flip that is not really like a "holder" of today. I told him I would seek advice here on the boards. I told him to leave it where it's at, but anyone got a better idea ?
Note : He was not interested in selling any of them. He wanted my advice , as a B&M dealer image
