Registry fever is alive and well

I have been watching AU-58 Liberty Nickels for almost 2 years. There are only two "+" graded coins, and this has not changed for some time. One 1885 and the other is an 1894. I knew the 1894 was coming up in a Heritage auction for some time and wondered just what it would bring.

Well, it just closed at $1,527.50. I know of two AU-58's for sale right now at $320, so that is an $1,200 premium for the plus. This is basically MS-65 money.

Given the recent news that you can send in your AU-58 for a grade review to get a "+", I hope to see the number of "+" coins increase.

It will be interesting to see which set this ends up in, which will give them the edge on the year end as we are getting a few that are AU-58 across the board.

I saw the 1885 AU58+ in hand a couple years ago at a show and wasn't impressed as I'd seen other older graded AU58's of this key date which where more the kind of slider I like. The 1885 58+ to me was a AU55 coin which was not something that approached AU64.

Will go fine the 1894 now as I'd like to see it.

That 1894 has nice luster but along with the rub has way too many hits & knocks for something I'm buy as a regular non plus AU58.

The Barber Half world has already been experiencing this. A 92P in 58+ recently went for around 3k.

Crazy money, especially, if you could have a choice MS piece for the same amount.

I must be honest----very few plus coins impress me. Many are not as good as others with just the base grade and the price differences can be substantial, as already noted.

I only own one plus coin, as it was the only one that I've seen (for me) that I felt really warranted it.

I've only ever seen 1 + coin I sort of liked.

For the + grading system to really work all the grading services would need to do a major recall of nearly 30 years worth of prior graded material and start regrading from scratch.

Instead of a recall, shouldn't the higher + prices encourage people to resubmit?

    Hmmm...perhaps my 1872-S H10C AU58 Gold CAC would garner a "+"...nah, let it be.

I still wonder why they just don't call these AU59. Didn't PCGS "invent" the MS64 grade 30 years ago?

I agree with you, John. I didn't understand why they just didn't add the AU 59 grade

instead of the plus grade. I guess the connotation of a plus could mean it possibly could

    grade into the MS arena .... ( i.e.: MS 61 )

I also agree with Broadstruck, I have not seen any 58+'s that I would consider worthy

of the designation. I know you don't like the grading of recently graded AU 58's to begin

with, and one of my newps is proof of that. I don't disagree with you, a 58 should not show

obvious rub ( just a luster break on the high points ).

I have not seen the two V Nickels the OP spoke of in AU 58+. I have not resubmitted any of my

Liberty Head Nickels, yet, for regarde/reconsideration for the new type of submission for AU 58+.
    .
The grade of 58 on most (if not all) of my V Nickels seems appropriate and I see no reason to try and upgrade.

I do own a few plus grades in Mint State ( but, that's how I purchased them. ) I don't think the slight

premium charge was too far out of line. I know I would never pay the premium spoken of for an AU 58+.

Being on top of the Everyman Category means nothing to me and to pay exorbitant money for the privilege

really takes the fun out of collecting. I have a good friend who is #1 in The Everyman Series for Barber Dimes

as he used my first set of Dimes as a basis for the current set. I know he never paid a premium for any "+"

grades. Knowing the coins better than anyone else, I think one or two might squeak into an AU 58+ holder

but certainly not too many. ( IMHO ).

Thee "+" is a designation, not a grade. But I'm certain, many are confused about this.

I was the benefactor of this phenomenon, having a 14-s buff nick on consignment grade 58+. It is a $200 coin that sold north of $800. I thought for sure I was cherrypicked an maybe a 14/13 but none of the grading services recognize that anymore. It was only after talking to auctioneer that I was made aware of this phenomenon.

I subsequently submitted a previously graded AU55 buff that came back 62. I think I would have been much better served with a 58+. And yes, I felt it was a super nice AU and not a fuggly MS
