Does look like a doubled die to me.

It might be re-engraved. The mint was doing that kind of stuff back then. It does not look like die chips...

The easiest way for me to try and describe might be to post a link about Jefferson nickels. Take a look down the thread a bit and you will see some close up images. Some dies were touched up by the mint (these had to be some pretty talented people doing the work.) The engraving looks similar to what you are seeing.

I bumped the thread, so take a look at the proof nickel thread about which is rarer.

You can just cut and paste this into the browser to see it, too.

I can't seem to get the other thread posted, so how about an image from the Jefferson Nickel thread.

There are zero Mercury Dime listed for re-engraving in the CPG. With the dimes being so small they may consider it too insignificant. It might be a question for James Wiles of Variety Vista (CONECA Attributor).

    Not in the CPG.

Not listed on John A Wexler's website, doubleddie.com

Not in The Authoritative Reference on Mercury Dimes by John Wexler and Kevin Flynn 2014.

Is it a DDO? I would want better photos but I believe it is.

The "3" is very similar to the 1943-D DDO. Here is the example I used to own and sold/traded away to DIMEMAN...my photo below.

I consider yours and the one I used to own as minor, cool but still minor. Nice find, congrats.

Why minor? Because without crazy amounts of magnification, it is only easily seen on one digit.

Could be doubled on a master die.

Greg, as you state it is similar.

If you look at a lot of Mercury dimes under high magnification I think you will find there are a lot of this type of work done on the dates. I don't think Master Die stuff I think Die Touchup.

    .

ive looked at some 1943 series mercs and it looks like there may be some hub/master die pups going to working dies since this effect or similar is on at least the D and S.

the ddo for the 43 series has doubling on more than just the 43 to help discern the difference.

as of now anyway. may change in the future.

    happy hunting!
