I promised the wife these would be the last coins this week, from todays HA sale. And to be honest all the pieces I was interested in seemed to go for a very reasonable price.



1736/5 Geo. II Shilling in 55. Let's be honest, 55 is being generous for this I think. But still, it's R2 in ESC and I just can't help liking these tougher date Geo. I and II shillings.







1746 Lima Sixpence in 65, but I really needed this one honey to go with the Lima Shilling I already have.









And finally an 1821 Shilling in 65, dark toned but this is the look I like. HA also has much more colorful pictures when it's tilted. These aren't rare at all but it's a one year type with a pretty reverse design so they are heavily collected.

Terrific coins. As for the 1736, you might be surprised after seeing that one in hand depending on the fields/surfaces.

As usual nice purchases, I especially liked your 1746-LIMA sixpence which was lot 33769. I purchased the lot in front of yours 33768, and it was a 1746-LIMA sixpence in 65. I see we are still chasing very similar coins.

Great looking coins JCM.



I love the reverse of that 1821 shilling -- there is something highly charming about the way they have used the thistle, clover, and rose on that design. Just great!



I saved for 2 months to bid on a shilling yesterday -- I'll post it when it arrives and I can get some better pictures.

Just to add a few more comments, The George II young head coinage was struck in a very high relief (especially for the time). Between minimal circulation, cabinet friction and the overall weakness of the strike (incomplete strike may be the better term), a coin can have an appearance of greater wear then what is actually present. This is especially true for the crowns and the earlier dated denominations.



One of the challenges for coin collectors with an interest in the reign of George II is sorting all of that out and determining what an accurate grade should be. It is not easy and often the standard is unreasonable as we look back with our 21st Century yardstick and measure (grade) coinage from 265-290 years ago.

George II is the fella for whom my home state was named.



I have a George I and a George III in my Box of 20, but presently no George II coins.



The only two George II's I presently own are both detector finds. One is a 1738 halfpenny I dug here in Georgia, and the other is a 1730 farthing I found in Little Bromley in Essex, UK when I was across the pond on my detecting trip.

The only George II coin that I have is a 1750 guinea.



A coin that is mentioned (sort of) in Robert Louis Stevenson's book Treasure Island.

I certainly wouldn't mind having a George II guinea. Had an Anne once, and George III once or twice, but that's it for guineas.
