I bought no coins with my $1.1 million lotto that I won
back in 1990.
This is my story on my Colorado Lotto winning ticket.
Several times a year my wife and I would travel from Las Vegas to Denver to see her folks. Usually made the trip, about 11-12 hours, in one day. Kinda got used to the treks and certainly enjoyed getting out of town and seeing the in-laws (yes I did get lucky with mine).
Nevada, Utah and Colorado is the route. I-15 North to I-70 then West to Denver.
Always stopped at the same stops for food and gas and rest breaks for wife and puppy and myself. Actually got to know a few of the clerks at the dives and gas stations.
Since we cannot buy lotto tickets here or in Utah I would always stop for gas and Colorado Lotto tickets in Grand Junction in far western Colorado. Wife and I would mark those little forms they use to put into the machine so that you get to pick your own numbers. Usually bought ten or so tickets at a buck a piece.
Always felt good as I knew that a good chunk of the money was going to the Schools and Parks and Recreation. Made it a wee bit easier to buy ten tickets. Well, this trip back was no different and I got gas and tickets at my usual stop in Grand Junction. Thursday was the day and the drawing was Saturday evening...we would normally be there for the drawing but for some reason that I no longer remember, we had to cut the trip short and come home on Saturday. Was not there to check my numbers and just plain forgot about the drawing. Got home safe and sound and went on with life.
About six months later my wife's sister called and they were chatting along when Karen (her sister) asked if Bob bought any Lotto tickets on the last trip to Denver.
Linda, my wife, said she was sure that I did, and asked Karen why. Well, said Karen, the Lotto hit that Saturday you left for $1.1 million and the ticket was sold in Grand Junction but nobody has come forward to claim it as of yet. Did he ever check his tickets, she asked? Linda said she didn't know and would ask me when I got home from work.
Hmmmm, could it be???
As I walked in the door Linda was asking if I ever checked my tickets from that last Denver trip...aaaaah, no I don't think I ever did, said I. Then the search began.
Wallet? nope
Coat pocket I was wearing?? nope.
Linda's purse?? nope.
Desk drawer?? nope.
Catch all bin in laundry room?? NOPE, panic begins...
Okay, Bob, okay, just relax. They probably sold tens of thousands of tickets in Grand Junction for that drawing.....no way yours was the winner anyway...AAAAARGH
So, off to the computer to check the numbers...Now we always had a bit of fun picking out the numbers as we drove. You know, birthdays, ages, and such that would just come up...so we could see real quick if anything even looked close....
OH MY GOD there they were, the kids and grand kids birthday and two other numbers that matched their OUR TWO ages!!!!!!!!!!!!!
NO FRICK'N way. WHERE'S ARE THOSE TICKETS????????????????????????????
Sat at the kitchen table to talk it out as to where we could have put them.....
Car???? ran out and checked the glove box........NOPE not there either. Then it hit me like a ton of bricks that just shattered my hopes......this is not the car we had when we went back to Denver....that car............
WAS SOLD FOUR MONTHS AGO.....
Never saw hide nor hair of the tickets and the Lotto went unclaimed after a year. My wife and I just think of all the good that $1.1 million dollar Lotto did for the schools and parks. Our little donation.
Never bought one single coin with those winnings....
So, if you are ever passing through Grand Junction and need gas, I can recommend the Conoco at the Horizon Drive exit (Airport exit)...Good luck to you!

Good tale if anyone believes it.
Knew this was coming when I saw keets had posted.

my "close" lottery story is far less interesting but it provided a heart-flutter moment for me --- the Ohio lottery was around $60-70 million and I was watching the numbers being picked, I think I had made five picks.
the first number came up and I had it in one of the lines, the second came up and I had that next, then the third and now the fourth which really had my attention!!! that was it, though, not another number on the whole ticket, it was really weird how it played out. I think I won $30 or $40.
Nope, it's the truth. Glad you enjoyed my read.

I don't believe Keets won anything like $30 or $40 bucks, though.
Here's a warning parable for coin collectors...
I believe you. What a story!

Strange things can and do happen.
There were multiple winners of the jackpot for one of the drawings. The "pattern" players won this jackpot which starts at $1M. An "X" could be made by drawing a line through the what-turned-out-to-be winning numbers selected on the play board. There were like ten independent winners again IIRC. Initially,I suspected that there was a failure of ticket terminals to shut down before lottery officials conducted the drawing and tickets may have been bought after the numbers had been drawn.
Thanks for sharing your true story AU and AG.
My "close one" was getting four numbers out of the six correct but the lowest number drawn was one to few and the highest number was one to many.Yours truly missed out by a hair on a $2M jackpot which was won by an individual in that drawing.
“I believe in intuitions and inspirations. I sometimes feel that I am right. I do not know that I am. When two expeditions of scientists, financed by the Royal Academy, went forth to test my theory of relativity, I was convinced that their conclusions would tally with my hypothesis. I was not surprised when the eclipse of May 29, 1919, confirmed my intuitions. I would have been surprised if I had been wrong. I am enough of the artist to draw freely upon my imagination. Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.” Albert Einstein- quoted in Saturday Evening Post interview (1929)
“Whoever is careless with the truth in small matters cannot be trusted with important matters.” For Einstein, honesty was fundamental. Attention to truth in small things reflected a person’s integrity on a larger scale.
I will say it now as a precursor to tonight's drawing --- If I win the drinks are on me for the rest of your lives.
I have nothing to add to this post, I just want in on the offer above.

True story that happened about ten years ago.
I also played a variation of our birthdays and age.
My wife was 45 at the time and still looks ageless.
"Can I pass for 35?" she would always ask...
"of course honey." I would dutifully and truthfully reply
It was some variation of 11, 25, 19, 50, 35 and 9
The winning numbers were 11, 25, 19, 50, 45 and we missed the powerball.
To this day, I kick myself, because If I would have used her real age instead of the fake age we would have hit five numbers and a several hundred thousand dollar payday if not more.
I think we netted $100 on the four numbers hit... yippie

here I go again....................an old friend of mine used to that if his Aunt had balls she'd be his Uncle. it is one of the biggest words in the dictionary.
PS we are in the middle of nowhere.
Seven year old out of date Calif. tags, restoration Volvo project, initial drive, San Jose, Meridien Ave, I got followed by a SJPD cop car, I parked, he parked behind me, took his keys out, walked up the sidewalk, unlocked the door, stepped inside. I left.
I won the lotto by not getting nabbed. By the cops.

Different type of Lotto but if it works for you it works for me!

Well bless your heart. I just might take up drinking if you win, bro.

Nice. I had a 1980 240DL 2-door sedan I picked up for $100 and drove for 6 years. I sold it to a restorer for $400 (sight unseen) and he was shocked at how great it was. Didn't burn oil, solid engine, no rust... I have him $100 in filters and oil plus a full tank of gas. I miss that car

I had to look that word up...

very lucky....she plays a game here called Take Five...five numbers, daily drawing.
A few years ago she hit the five numbers for $33+ thousand.... she wins smaller prizes (three/four numbers) frequently. Keeps track of all her expenditures and winnings. She is 91 years old
and this is her entertainment. Each year she has come out ahead... between $1 and 2.5 thousand. She has a lot of fun with it... Cheers, RickO
Then, I cleaned out that drawer not long ago and the tickets went back YEARS!
Almost a thousand dollars worth of purchases, and I missed out on maybe $30 of winnings.
I only play with pennies and small change after searching them for varieties.
Easier than going to coinstar.
NADA....

True story.
Still better than these people did
Too many positive BST transactions with too many members to list.
I agree on the "you suck". Also, "that sucks".
I won $8 on a scratch off ticket once.
True story.
Still better than these people did
Me too!
Other than having to spend $16. to come upon that single winning ticket. . .

First time I played it I had the first 4 in a row, I was EXCITED, then missed the last 2.
Still thought I'd won a bunch of $$$, won $70.00.
A few months later, I am not fibbing, I had one number lower of all 6.
HUH, literary license Keets????
Nope, it's the truth. Glad you enjoyed my read.
I have no reason at all to doubt the story but I'd lay long odds that if you found the tickets none of them would match.
I find discarded winning tickets and usually take my money in tickets. I'm figuring smoeday I'll be the first million dollar winner who never shelled out a dollar. A friend of mine has found several hundred dollars in winning tickets and has never bought one.
For the year 2014, I won 214,000 total for the year. This was from 69 wins
ranging from 1,200 to 32,700
In one 24 hour period I hit 17 of these pots.
Now, don't ask me how much I lost for the same year!!!!
