I can't really see a need for it. there are enough threads started here and enough members who collect Exonumia that they get attention, but I believe a dedicated forum would be very quiet.

Definitely. That way everyone can post Exonumia in the coin forum along with their darkside stuff.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.

when I read the thread title I was surprised something such as this hadn't already been posted. most advanced collections have some sort of non-standard-coin items included, whether that's encased postage, tokens or medals, presidential/political items or stuff like peace medals. if a strict refusal of "US coins only" were enforced here I suspect we'd see participation drop and arguments begin over what can be posted.

the best advice is to just avoid threads that don't interest you.

No I would go there about as often as I go to the Stamp Forum which is never.

I don't think that would be a good idea.

My opinion is that we have a fragmented board already (US coins, foreign coins, precious metals, Registry and whatever else) and that participation lessens in any particular board the more that the overall forum is teased apart. If anything, I would suggest that some boards get folded back into the mail US coin forum so that more folks might see and read them and, therefore, they may get more action.

There would certainly be some advantages to having such a forum and I used to be a big proponent. If it were toincrease participation on the message boards I'd still be a proponent but I'm not confident it would have much effect any longer. We'd no longer see some of the great medals posted on this forum and that would be a huge loss especially for those individuals who wouldn't read the exonuumia forum.

There're a lot of tie-ins between coins, tokens, and medals and if all exonumia were posted elsewhere this relationship would be less visible.

Certainly before PCGS starts grading chuckee cheese and bus tokens there must be such a forum. image

I've posted coins and Exonumia and I like both in the same forum. Members would be debating about using two Copper for the Weekend threads, etc.

I agree with this. With declining participation, I think the top 7 categories could be distilled to one or two (including foreign and ancients), with separate categories for buy/sell.

sure why not. if it does not work get rid of it.
  • For me it would not matter, I would always check both forums. But I think some people would only check the US forum and miss out on some great collectibles that they could become interested in.

The Redbook which is called "A Guide Book of United States Coins" (1986 version) includes Civil War Tokens, Private and Territorial Gold, Colonial and State issues, Washington Tokens and other issues that are not from the US Mint. Most of these tokens did circulate here and were used as money. Do we really want no posting of any of these types on the "US Forum"?

I'm more of a purist in these matters and I prefer them to not clutter the USCF.

I am ok if I 'miss' something that I 'could' become interested in.

If it goes the way of the stamp forum, then maybe that tells others that what interests them doesn't interest many other people. Nothing wrong with that, but it would surely put some of the thinking in the right place.....

I would prefer to see this than a dedicated exonumia section. I like the diversity of posts and what I learn from them.

I agree with TomB and CuKevin. Indeed, I'd like to see the Registry board discontinued and the posts moved back to the US coin forum. When the Registry forum was created, the number of registry posts was just a bit less than the number of US coin posts and both were much greater than is presently the case, so the separation made sense. But since then the number of posts on the Registry forum have dropped way down. I'd prefer to see them posted here, where I have a greater chance of reading them before they are 3 weeks old when I happen to glance over at the Registry forum.

As an avid exonumia collector, I agree with Tom and CuKevin in that I like having a more general diverse forum, so that we don't have to bounce back and forth between various forums. I think it's more educational to see the various types of coins and even medals on a main forum.

Nah - some of the exonumia is interesting and I'd never visit another forum. It would dead end like the registry and stamp forums.

Here's some neat exonumia.......I think...... image

this is an interesting point. it would mean that non-coins being pictured or discussed at the US Forum, the DCarr issues included, would be an enforced no-no and should be at the new Exonumia forum. some respondents to this thread might be disappointed. let the thinning begin.

While I'd like to see an exonumia forum, I share the same concerns as others about the activity of such a sub-forum. I think potential future exonumia collectors might never see the cool things that are always being posted in the US Coin forum.

I'm sure many have already been turned on to tokens and medals simply by stumbling across a thread here.

No. The amount of traffic on this forum isn't unmanageable, and I don't think the forums would benefit from further balkanization.

No additional categories: how about 2 forums just like Stamps? US Coins and BST US Coins.

It would be great if posters would be specific in their titles so that we can skip posts we don't want to read... e.g., no more "WHAT IF...." postings
