Convincing fake Newfie 50c piece

I originally posted this back on 6/24/15 on a couple other forums, as I have not been very active here. CU member YQQ somewhat re-posted it here at that time, but anyhow...

I feel this needs to be brought up again. Many of us are already aware of certain types of high quality fakes, such as the German thalers and double thalers coming from our good friends in China and HK. They also fake Canadian and Newfie coins, which (in my opinion) are even harder to spot than the German thalers, Morgan dollars, 8 reales, etc coming from the same source.

There is a seller out of Italy and one out of Germany. they sell NFL "gold" pieces and other "high end" items. like there is no tomorrow.



I have sort of given up on the issue as very few collectors actually really care. they hope somoene else like you and I will do the dirty work involved to make certain that a posted item is a fake. It is not always easy to be sure.

some sellers are very brave and say open that their stuff is not "gold". .. and guess what??? they sell them like hot cakes.. then the problems start as some buyers re-sell them as real.

I rest my case. everything from literally cheap 1 cent coins to expensive silver dollars and varieties are game.

a one cent coin??, are you crazy a friend said.... oh yes. the newest trick is to sell a real one and a fake in pairs. the fake is usually a nice grade and the real one is not so nice.

do the math. you can buy above NFL 50 cent item in HKG for 50 cents if you know where to go.. or you can order it by mail for 2.50

and while you are ordering anyway, why not include a couple of 1948 $ 1 and some ML 47s.., each for 2.50 or less.. or some CC dollars..all the same...postage included.

It is a sad situation... and it could be easily reduced or stopped all together. But neither the Mint nor Canadian Law enforcement ( or US) have no interest.

all it needs is for the GOV. to do one small thing:

print another question on the customs entry declaration card: did you accuire any US or Canadian coins or look alike coins while out of the country.

sorry for the rant...but it is a real problem.

Thank you for the post. This type of thing makes me ill. We also see this quite a bit with US coins and the 1839-O Reeded Edge half dollar appears to be the new darling of these folks.

Yes YQQ it is a serious problem, and one perpetuated by collectors simply believing that common circulated coins are not worth counterfeiting. Wrong! I've seen counterfeit Chinese 1 yuan coins, worth about 12 cents US in exchange. Granted, these are currency fakes rather than collectible coins, but if 12 cents is worth counterfeiting, so is every single collectible coin out there.
