How did you do in 2015 on completing the sets you are working on?

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,493 ✭✭✭✭✭
Given that it's the end of 2015, how did you do on filling in or completing the set(s) you are working on?

For myself, the three big additions (unfortunately no decent pix of them) were an 1858-O Seated Liberty half dollar in MS64 for the 1858 business strike set, a PR66BN IHC for the 1893 proof set (no gold), and a 1953-D MS66FBL Franklin (an upgrade) for the Franklin business strike set.

The Franklin set has been completed for some years now, except for the occasional upgrade. The 1893 proof set just needs a cameo Barber quarter. The 1858 business strike set still has a long way to go.

I started a 75 coin set and am about 33% complete, give or take a couple. Not too bad.

Good and not so good, I'll go with ok.

Made some small strides in my 1932-1964 Washington Quarter set.

Didn't quite finish my 7070 like I had planned.

I added a 1793 wreath cent and an 1804 large cent to my date/major variety large cent collection.

Still need a chain cent, a 1799, an 11/0 and a few upgrades among the middle and late dates.

Skyman: As you know, the gold in that 1858 set is going to be super tough. The S mint $5's and $10's and the P mint $10 can be real stoppers if you are looking for high quality pieces. Great challenge!

Here is my 58-S $5 which may be the finest known.

For me, I completed my 1842 Half Eagle transitional varieties set with all seven of the combinations of 1842 half eagle date and letter variations. Still want to upgrade the 42-O but it was and still is my favorite numismatic ended our so far.

I added one date to my Buffalo Nickel collection and made a nice upgrade on another date.

Needless to say, I'm a VERY patient collector.

This year was hard on the budget on my end.

I was able to nearly complete a 1940 mint set that I started in April. I am just lacking the quarters, and the 1940S half.

I also began the following mint sets: 1931, 1936, 1937, 1938 (coming out dynamite), 1942 (also coming out dynamite), 1943, and 1944.

I plan to build sets for every year from 1929 to 1945, and am being fussy about what I buy, but don't need MS67's and above. Target grades are MS63 to MS66, with the tougher coins MS62, or even under graded MS61's.

My paper money collecting is slowing down progress on the coins, but I love collecting both.

    Stats for 2015:

    Wheats: 1935, 1937D, 1937S, 1938D, 1939, 1940, 1940D, 1940S, 1942, 1943, 1944D (11)

    Nickles: 1931S, 1936, 1938, 1938D (Jefferson), 1939, 1940, 1940D, 1940S, 1944P (9)

    Dimes: 1937S, 1938D, 1938S, 1940, 1940D, 1940S, 1942D, 1942S (8)

Quarters: Deposit on 1942S in MS65 (toned nicely)

Halves: 1940 (1) Edit to add: (EX (undergraded IMO) PCGS62).

    Total including hold: 30 coins.

Goal for 2016: Complete 1937, 1940, 1942, 1944, and near complete 1938 (the 1938D half in UNC is going to be tough on the pocket book).

Was able to get down to one first spouse left in my MS and PR set. Was able to add some quality PR Platinum $100's thanks to Mitch as well. 2015 was a good year, 2016 looks to be very expensive of a year coming up as well!

I completed both my doubled die type set and my color coin type set. Took me a few years for both.

Upgraded a few early dates in my clipped Lincoln set, and added a couple of post-2009 coins that I'm not collecting by date. My goal this year is to get the set photographed and posted somewhere to share with everyone.

I'm down to the very tough coins in my 1793-1998 US type set of circulating designs. Added a 1795 dollar and 1849 open wreath gold dollar, and had high hopes of adding some early gold and maybe 1793 copper as well, but in late spring, ended up buying a cabin in the woods instead. Spent most of the summer there with my family, and just wrapped up two winter weeks including our whitest Christmas ever, so well worth the numismatic sacrifice.

Did manage to pick up an 1825 B-1, and not one but two 1825 B-3 late die state (with cud at UNITED) quarters for my Browning set, as well as a 1925-S California half for 7070(B) and just recently a nice 1949 quarter for my toned Washington Dansco set

Have some plans for 2016, hoping to add additional early type coins and large sized quarters, best of luck to all in the new year!

Seated Liberty Half Dimes. I hit the wall with availability. Out of 78 for the set I need 12 coins. I haven't seen the ones I need become available (in PCGS) for months in any grade with the exception of just a few high grades that were priced far out of my reach.

Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
