I think it's fine, but I am sure others will disagree. On my end, I would need to hear the evidence to know the request for donations is legit and not someone just trying to scam some dollars. Just my opinion...

I would certainly say it's appropriate especially if it may prevent others from falling victim (assuming they were wronged criminally). Sadly, in my experience, many victims of numismatic related crimes don't pursue the issue either out of helplessness or embaressment.

aren't legal fees paid by the place of jurisdiction (the taxpayers) when it comes to prosecuting criminals?

Unless of course it's a civil case about which I would need to first know the details.

Seems reasonable to me. Definitely related to numismatics, and I think here is more appropriate than BST for that kind of thing. Those who disagree can move along or just never read the thread to begin with. Just be up front in the title.

  • If it is a criminal case, fees are paid by the state, county or city prosecutor. If it is a civil case then most likely asking for donations would not be proper without hearing from both sides and that can get real messy. The best way to determine if donations are even appropriate would be to list the case information and relevant information without any self-generated opinion.

TORTS: A tort is a wrongful act that injures or interferes with another's person or property. A tort case is a civil court proceeding. The accused is the "defendant" and the victim is a "plaintiff." The charges are brought by the plaintiff. If the defendant loses, the defendant has to pay damages to the plaintiff.

CRIMES: A crime is a wrongful act that the state or federal government has identified as a crime. A criminal case is a criminal proceeding. The accused is also called a 'defendant". The victim is the person who has been hurt or the state of Georgia or other governmental entity. The charges are brought by the government. If the defendant loses, the defendant could serve a sentence. A fine could be paid to the government and there is possible restitution to the victim.

Is it a civil or criminal action, i.e. a crime is mentioned. If a crime, it is a governmental action, and no legal fees are due. If civil, then a tort would have to occurred, and the plaintiff, most likely through an attorney, will file suit. Depending on the attorney, probability of success, etc., the attorney will seek a retainer, monthly fees, or "roll" everything together based on final settlement.

The stronger the case, the better the attorney, the less likely there is money paid up front.

If it is a $2500 case, he said versus he said, with no paper trail, fuzzy valuations, opinions (The GEM BU coin has a milk spot only visible under 50x magnification), and allegations, most attorneys I know would not even touch it, as it is not worth their time. There are attorneys billing over $1000 an hour in the Dallas area.

Since you describe the incident as a crime, what would be the legal fees?

The crime should be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agency.

This could be local police, county sheriff, US Post Office, FBI, US Secret Service, all depending

on the nature of the criminal activity.

I don't see anything inappropriate in asking. You are a respected long time and active forum

    member.

Your question is valid, however, more details will be required in order to understand the

    situation.....Cheers, RickO

it is not appropriate at all to solicit donations here.

Please though send the operators of this forum a message and see what response they give you.

A man stood outside a church up the street soliciting donations and the pastor threw him off the property. He came down to the coin shop and I handed him twenty bucks. Then asked him to pray with me, for the reverend.

I don't think it's either appropriate, nor inappropriate when a man is humbled to the Nth degree.
Not looking for kudos, either. Nor charity. (that's love for those who need the definition).

    As to the "ethics" question:

Try THIS LINK and set up your page there. Then put that the link to your sigline and I'll be glad to use a broom to sweep up the litter, left about.
This business and all business is about cleaning it up, isn't it ?

On that same token, or flip side, you know the U.S. Coin Forum is about U.S. Coins and stamps, and guns and knives, and football and doctors and issues that face us every day in the world around us.

With respect to that; the more we pollute the integrity and sanctity of the forum and how we use it, the more the air stinks. But that's a good thing too. It clears the air.
It's always about the criminal element that upsets mothers and then they steer their children away from the greatest hobby…. because it is for kings only .

Now back to us paupers and princess.
