How rare are Three Cent Silvers with medal alignment (rotated 180 degrees)?

Very recently picked up a nicely toned brown, teal, and yellow nearly matched on both sides 1861 3cS in PCGS MS62. I bought it for the nice toning. But upon getting the coin in the mail today and inspecting it closer, I realized the reverse was rotated a perfect 180 degrees! How rare is medal alignment for 3cS and how much value, if any, does it add to the coin?

Here is a link to a useful rotated die census that I think was created by a member here.

The 1861 3 cent is a somewhat more available example. Not sure if it adds any value but it is interesting. I have or maybe had one in around F or VF. Did not pay any premium.

  • Very nice find but am unable to state anything about the rotation error.

This has been brought up several times over the years. Doesn't really add much value unless you reholder coin as an error and find someone to buy into it

There were a lot of rotated die errors, some of them exactly 180 degrees, during the Civil War. Apparently they hired a die setter who didn't understand what he was supposed to be doing.

Thank you for the replies. I thought I had noticed more die rotation errors for Civil War Era coins, but definitely wanted to check with you.

They are common enough that I removed a nice one from its PCGS slab and put it into my Dansco 7070 album.

There is a Proof Liberty nickel (can't remember the year offhand without looking it up) that comes with a 180 rotated reverse. I remember a cute story about a guy that completed his Liberty nickel Proof set and put it in a Capital Plastic holder and was annoyed that the reverses did not all line up!

Tom, the Liberty Nickel is 1903 - I've had 'em

in Proof 64 to Proof-67 with the 180 degree rotation.

The 3 Cent Silver is scarce in high grades, and both

still bring decent premiums, I've found......

There are quite a few 1868 proof Indian cents with near 180 degree rotated reverses, and one known 1872 proof Indian cent with a 180 degree rotation.
