NEWP 1938 Proof Walker

JustacommemanJustacommeman Posts: 22,852 ✭✭✭✭✭
Well after eight years and viewing literally hundreds of proof Walkers my set is theoritically complete. It will be fun tinkering with it perhaps over time. 1938 was without the most elusive coin for me to find. I wanted one with frost, super deep mirrors and that "rolling" liquid mercury look in the fields.

This is a PCGS 67+CAC. The set contains some 68's and the balance 67's. Will get them all TrueViewed. ( a few are)

This was a labor of love

Congrats Mark, that is a lovely coin. One day I want to put together a CAMEO or near-cameo set of walker proofs like you have.

Here is a recent 1938 PR67 newp for me:

That's a fine looking Walker. Mark, your patience paid off waiting for the best looking coin!
  • JustacommemanJustacommeman Posts: 22,852 ✭✭✭✭✭
Stealer that is a great example! I love it.

I have a couple well toned walkers in the proof set. May end up with one white cameoesque set and one toned set when it's all said and done. For now they will have to play nicely together

Simply beautiful. Proof Walkers are a bear to find with contrast and appeal in high grade (as you are more than aware than I). Lovely to see. Can you post them all together?

    I'll be patient. image

Just went and looked through the registry sets of proof walkers for the top four or so. What contrast in presentation and quality of the coins. I am sure part is the photography, but there are some high grade coins in some of the sets that are ghastly. I don't care if there are no hairlines and hard mirrors on a proof, it should absolutely be maxed at 67. Gha!!

In the top set, that 1942 in Proof 69, by contrast looks absolutely perfect. Have you seen it in hand? Wow!

Congratulations-this is a great final piece. Years ago I started to put together a proof set of Walkers but gave up when I had a much more difficult time than I expected finding ones I liked. Look forward to the Trueviews.

Oh gosh....just looked at coinfacts. Don't know if the PF69 is worth 15x what a nice 68 is worth!

That 69 looks to be a beast and I have not seen it in hand......buying high grade Walkers only requires stacks of cash and a set can be put together very quickly. Finding them really really nice requires cash and lots patience

Here is a couple others from the set.......mark

The 36 and 41 are both excellent examples and demonstrate the wide range of what a cool coin can look like.
  • airplanenutairplanenut Posts: 22,335 ✭✭✭✭✭
I spent quite a long time looking for just one proof walker that showed some contrast, and I had all dates open to me. Still, the vast majority weren't worth even a second thought. It's no small task to build a whole set of high-end pieces, and this is quite the accomplishment. I always appreciate the sets that were built over time with patience, rather than those whose quality is compromised by a desire to rush to the finish line.

Wow, what beautiful coins. Walker proofs can be stunningly beautiful.

Best one I ever owned was a Pr66 in a rattler that had nearly DCAM obverse and little or no reverse contrast.

Had the liquid look like the 38 though, not nearly as nice.

    Well done!

WOW. Some wonderful proof examples here.

The two white coins are exceptionally nice and really show the design.

The colors some of the toned examples can exhibit make for works of art for this superb design.

Thanks for posting the examples for all to see.

That 36 is really nice! I guess it would make cameo if there are more frost on the sun. Congrats on your set.

    I understand your search.

I looked for ages for nice Merc proofs, and finally gave up & went back to my Barbers.

I found plenty of them, but none of them had 'the look' that I wanted.

    Congrats on the acquisition

That 1936 looks cameo to me. If it were a seated or Barber half, it probably would be so designated. The 1938 is not far from cameo either. Wonderful coins.

Down the road, I suspect the TPG's will have to come out with some sort of rating of cameo contrast for Walkers. Cha-ching.
