question on purchasing 1875S 20 cent piece

I am not a coin collector but would like to purchase a 20 cent coin because of the uniqueness factor --20 cent coin, interesting!-- at least to me.

I am thinking XF range so what kind of price should I expect to pay for this type of coin? I having been watching EBAY and checking Heritage but any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

I have been told that the 1875S is the most affordable.

  • Here's the PCGS Price Guide. It's the "Dealer Ask" price for coins in PCGS holders. If you shop around and watch Ebay auctions, you can probably find a PCGS graded 20 cent piece at 85-90% of what the Price Guide says.

Be happy if you can find a nice one. I don't see too many in this grade level I like. I have nothing against this grade level, just most I see don't have much eye-appeal.

I was thinking that it would fit my budget better than a higher grade.

I guess I wasn't clear enough. I don't see many circulated double dimes with nice eye-appeal at all. And that's where my budget is as well.

  • I have seen some real ugly ones on EBAY to be sure.

Keep an eye on David Lawrence website. They seem to have more than others listed. Not sure what is there now. David Kahn gets a few decent ones also.

If you're already looking at ebay and Heritage then you are essentially looking at the two largest sources, and markets, for this coin; both certified and raw. Therefore, you should have a pretty good idea of the market price already. Also, stman knows his stuff regarding original vs. altered coinage and stman was mentioning that finding a nice, attractive, accurately graded, essentially unaltered coin is much more difficult than simply finding any old coin to fill this slot.

I sure couldn't argue with that.

Pay attention to strike. Take your time in looking for this coin. It is a common date and you will be able to find a nice one if you have patience.

I bought this raw (not slabbed) 1875-S for $225 at the 2015 Winter FUN show in Orlando. Asside from the the spot on the reverse it is a perfect EF-40. I've used it to set beside a quarter in a simlar grade in an exhibit of Twenty Cent Pieces. It's not perfect, but I don't think you could do much better for that kind of money.

As mentioned, finding one of these with eye appeal is the key. Most are ugly in some way or another. Take your time to find a nice one.

Nice EF coins are out there, just not at bargain prices. Expect to pay $200-$250 for a nice, original, problem-free EF 1875-S. If it's not a series you have studied extensively, stick with PCGS graded coins (others are a bit more loose with grading) and preferably with a CAC sticker.

As mentioned earlier, David Kahn is a great resource for nice 19th century coinage. Brian Greer is another excellent source.

    Also consider the 3-cent piece.

The silver version (aka "Trime") was minted 1851 - 1873. Millions were made in the early years, easy to find on ebay.

There's also a version made of nickel (1865 - 1889). 11 million were made in 1865, easy to find for cheap.

Civil War era coins are interesting to lots of folks (like me).

    Enjoy your search!

Before you buy online, browse thru your local coin shops.

See what the coins look like in person.

And use a magnifying glass if you have one.

I love double dimes! Very cool series. Don't neglect the three cent nickel, the three cent silver piece, the two cent piece, half-dimes, and of course half-cents.

Northern Nevada Coin has a large selection of Twenty Cent coins on their website. They may be priced slightly on the high side, but they're a good company. I've bought a couple of coins from them.

Try using the new collectors.com website. It pulls from nearly all sources and combines the results onto one page.

One thing to always remember with coins,

… "the better it is, the more it costs". And you can pretty much take that to the bank.

There are many with repunched mint marks that are easily seen without magnification.

Oh, yeah.....First you buy a 1875s....then think to yourself, "Gee, a CC 20cent would be a great addition, with even more interesting history!"....."Might as well complete the entire series now"......"Hey, the Seated Quarters look a lot like the 20cent, and would make a nice companion piece"......"Can't hurt to pick up a Barber and Standing Quarter to go with the seated"....."Wow, a quarter type set would be cool"....."Why stop at quarters?"......

I've never had that temtation. I wanted to do the Twenty Cent Piece set, but when I look at the lenght of the Seated, Barber and Standing Lib. quaters I want no part of them. The types will do just fine.
